2 men from the Isle of Wight have been arrested following yesterday’s public order incident in Ventnor, which saw Police engaged in a 3-hour standoff with the duo located high up on a rooftop.
As first reported by Island Echo, Police were called to Lowtherville Road shortly before 16:15 on Thursday afternoon. It’s here that they were faced with 2 men refusing to come down from the roof of a residential property.
The men – 1 of whom was dressed in nothing but a pair of shorts – then proceeded to throw objects at the officers, who were later clad in riot gear and armed with shields for their own protection.
Lowtherville Road was cordoned off at both ends and residents were told to stay in their houses as dozens of officers descended on the area. Demands from the men for water and tobacco could be heard all around.
No one was injured in the incident and the duo came down off the roof of their own accord at just before 19:25. 1 of the men descended on scaffolding, the other via a ladder.
It has now been confirmed that a 21-year-old man and a 28-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage. The 21-year-old has also been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm following an assault in Ventnor on 20th June, which left a man in his 40s with facial injuries.
They remain in custody at this time.
It has also been confirmed that shortly before the rooftop standoff yesterday a 39-year-old woman from Ventnor was arrested on suspicion of public order offences, alongside a 28-year-old man from Ventnor who was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
It comes after an altercation between 3 men on Newport Road on Wednesday afternoon, followed by reports of criminal damage and a public order incident an hour later on Lowtherville Road – with both incidents being linked.
In Wednesday’s incident a woman in her 30s suffered minor cuts to her hands.

Thank the lord for the police finally get hold of them! These 2 are ventnors worst! Think most people in ventnor have had dealings or know someone who has problems with these idiots! Ventnor will be celebrating and probably sleep alot better knowing these waste of air are banged up!!
Hope they don’t just get a warning, should get proper punishment. How about a 2 year stint in the army to teach them values and concern for other people.
Clearly two of life’s failures.
These pathetic individual were apparently protesting for the 39 year old female who was arrested the day before in upper Ventnor. The same person who went on a shoplifting spree in Asda & Sainsbury’s in May of this year & Home Bargains twice last year & forgot to take the means to pay on all occasions! One of these waist of space tossers was the 28 yr old in court on Monday for an incident in Ryde last weekend. Could also be the 28 year old male arrested in upper Ventnor on Wednesday.
Total Low Life.
Wonder if the Judge Will think the same.
