40-year-old Richard Hunt has been banned from driving for 12 months after pleading guilty to drug driving.
Hunt, of Milton Road in Cowes, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday morning charged with 1 count of drug driving – cannabis.
The court heard that on 19th November last year, Police were travelling along Military Road near Niton when they saw a Vauxhall Zafira weaving across the road. The vehicle, driven by Hunt, was stopped and officers smelt cannabis.
A drugs wipe was carried out after a small amount of cannabis was found. That matter was dealt with by means of community resolution.
Magistrates heard that the blood test results showed a cannabis reading of 7 – the prescribed limit being 2.
Defending, Mr Nicholas White said that his client, of no previous convictions, did not accept that his driving was bad. Mitigating factors were given including that no passengers were in the vehicle and the traffic was light.
Mr White explained that Hunt’s grandfather had died 5 days prior to the offence taking place, with Hunt ‘deeply troubled’ by the death, leading to the error of judgement.
The court heard that Hunt was deeply and sincerely remorseful for what he did and that he had taken steps to address his behaviour ahead of the arrival of his unborn child.
Magistrates handed Richard Hunt a 12-month driving ban and fined him £380, as well as ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £38 surcharge.
