A woman who was driving to the hospital with medication for her sick mum has been given a 17-month driving ban after being caught behind the wheel whilst drunk.
29-year-old Rachael Woods appeared before Magistrates on Tuesday charged with 1 count of driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit – namely 62 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35.
Magistrates heard from the prosecution that Woods, a single mother of Jubilee Close in Freshwater, was spotted by Police in the vicinity of Drill Hall Road car park in Newport at just gone 00:20 on 31st October. A swerving action – which Woods denies happened – caught the officer’s attention.
The Toyota Aygo that Woods was driving was pulled over by the officers and they soon noted that she was slurring her speech. She made admissions that she had been drinking that afternoon.
Defending, Barry Arnett said that his client never intended to drive that night but had been pleaded by her mother to take medication to her at St Mary’s Hospital.
Taking Rachael Wood’s guilty plea into account, Magistrates handed her a 17-month driving ban, fined her £120 and ordered her to pay £85 costs with a £34 surcharge.
