Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club juniors returned from Dorney Lake with 2 golds and 2 bronzes after a successful Ball Cup Regatta.
8 SSRC juniors made the trip to Dorney Lake for the Ball Cup Regatta South, a British Rowing-affiliated event designed to give small and emerging clubs the chance to experience true multilane competition.
Scullers from J13 through to J18 competed over the short and sharp 750m course, with strong crosswinds causing heavy delays early in the day and leading to a condensed programme.
With no opportunity for eliminators, racing was decided by a straight time trial, putting competitors under immediate pressure. For many of the club’s junior scullers, it was also their first experience of a stakeboat start.
SSRC enjoyed a tremendous day, with Rose Collier claiming gold in the WJ16 single scull and Martha Eggleton winning gold in the WJ15 single scull.
Layla Katirewa took bronze in the WJ16 single scull, while Isaac King added a further bronze in the OJ17 single scull to complete an impressive medal haul.
Beyond the podium, Fin Diffey finished 8th in the OJ17 single scull before teaming up with Isaac King to place 9th in the OJ18 double scull.
Lottie Pettitt finished 10th in the WJ17 single scull, while Alex Collier came joint 7th in the OJ14 single scull in a highly competitive field.
Making her club debut, young Ava-Rose Shaw came home 10th in the WJ13 single scull — no small feat given the strong crosswinds on the day.
Alex Collier also took to the single scull for the very first time and handled the challenge with real composure, completing the course and competing at this level on a first outing for the club.
