A dog jumping out of a car window has caused a crash on a main road in Sandown this morning (Tuesday).
The crash occurred shortly before 10:30 at the bottom of Broadway near the junction with Avenue Road.
A red Vauxhall Astra has collided with the side of a grey Citroen C4 Picasso which has seen its front and rear airbags deployed.
Island Echo understands that the driver of the Astra had to perform an evasive manouvere after his dog jumped out of the window.
Both drivers and the dog are okay with none of the involved parties needing medical attention.
A single fire crew from Shanklin is at the scene controlling the traffic.
As a result of the crash Broadway is blocked with motorists are having to divert locally. Southern Vectis route 2,3 and 8 are diverting via Avenue Road and High Street.

UPDATE @ 11:05 – Police have arrived and have closed the road.
A Recovery truck from Bartletts has arrived at the scene and will begin to remove the pair of stricken vehicles.
UPDATE @ 13:30 – Broadway has now re-opened.

A very clever dog able to open the window wide enough to jump out
When driving you see far too many idiots driving with their
Dogs hanging out of car or van Windows
The Dog owner in this case should be banned from ever owning a dog
and their insurance should be void because insurance policies do not
allow for such behaviour.
They should be forced to pay out of their own pocket.
Why should our premiums increase due to idiots breaking the rules.
I pray the dog is ok.
Sod the dog stupid mutt might got someone killed
The poor dog does not have a choice who owns them
Go away you pot head
What a complete waste of time and expense for Emergency services
Whilst they are attending an unnessecary accident, persons elsewhere may
need the Emergency services.
All the costs of the Emergency services should be billed to the clumsy driver
who cannot control their animal.
You muppet what do you know
I know only an idiot would do this.
Moany old Trevor never stops moaning. All he does is repeat the same moans that everyone else is repeating. Boring old moaner. If you can’t write something positive or constructive, write nothing. Maybe you could start an awareness campaign to prevent similar incidents. Or design a simple and cheap dog restraint for cars. No you won’t because all you do is moan, moan, moan …
Just keeps dogs on a lead in vehicles too
So many brainless idiots driving on Island Roads.
Brainless idiots everywhere, how do you know they’re from iow
Just like you then…….
More irresponsible dog owners will be along soon….
When will dog owners learn that their failure to keep their pets under proper control can have serious consequences for others. It’s a legal requirement to have dogs properly restrained in a vehicle to avoid this sort of irresponsible nonsense. Hope the lawyers are unleashed on the guilty.
The HW in Island car registrations isn’t accidental, it stands for “Half Wit”
What an idiot, driving with no dog restraint. Hope the Police arrested him, isn’t it a legal requirement to restrict dog movement in cars?
Yes it is, a £1000 fine
Expensive mistake leaving the window open with a skittish and silly dog in the car.
Silly mistake was the idiot driver who did not have the dog restrained in the car
The dog was supposed to be secured by a harness or other device to stop this happening or taking the attention of the driver.and in a rear seat
Rather the mutt got run over such a inconvenience
what a total prat you are
Maybe you should try jumping out a moving car window?
I hope the idiot will be prosecuted for his stupidity, it is illegal to have an unrestrained animal in a vehicle and now he has crashed his car into an innocent motorist potentially causing serious injuries.
We see this every single day, stupid drivers with out of control animals, it is time the roads police made prosecuting these dog owners a matter of urgency.
This is a new one! Still it is illegal to drive with an unrestrained dog in your car. Let’s see what happens.
this is why dogs in cars are meant to be secured with a harness/ in a crate etc
it is a legal requirement for dogs to be secured whilst being transported in a car, so I hope the person who’s dog it was will be prosecuted,.. (and be liable for all the damage to the cars)
Luckily no injuries this time, but could have been so much worse
Everyone should know a dog needs a seatbelt harness so it can be restrained safely. Well almost everyone, the owner of this poor dog didn’t. I’m sure the Police have given him instructions to do so in future!
I think it was a ‘Springer’
Picture showed a Pug !!
How convenient right outside Sandown Garage?? Really no need for Batletts would have thought??
Pretty sure its fuel and a used car forecourt? TBF has probably changed a bit since the last time you were out in the 70’s?
Naughty little boy !
And has the irresponsible driver been charged? Probably not.
Rule 57 of the Highway Code states that you must “make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained” in a vehicle
I hope the woman in Bembridge, who regularly puts her two dogs in her car with no restraints to take them to the beach for a walk, sees this article. She might then think twice about her actions.
Like anybody actually restrains their dog in the car. Stick them in the boot. That’ll keep them out of trouble.
If they’re in the boot, with a dog guard, so they can’t get into the passenger compartment, they are suitably restrained
I’m sure that’s a very expensive lesson learned as the insurance will be void so 1 car lost one you should pay the damages for and a good court fine hopefully.. lesson hopefully learned?
There’s a man the drives a silver Peugeot estate car down the dual carriage way feom the hospital with a terrier type dog on his lap, hanging out the window and jumping on the driver. No collar or harness on. The driver just sits there kissing it laughing. Seen him about 4 times now over a week.
57
When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.
Dogs are supposed to be restrained when travelling in a car. I quite often see dogs, obviously not restrained with their heads hanging out of the car window.
It’s an offence to not restrain you mutt in a vehicle so hope he gets charged and prosecuted
Could have been a lot worse some one could have been seriously injured but i still love dogs
Why was the dog loose in the car ,the law says dogs must be restrained in the car.
There is no Law on this Island, no one knows what they are doing
They let persons park on pavements 24/7 bringing Traffic to a standstill and
making pavements “unsafe” for pedestrians.
Health and safety does not exist on the Island
The Island is sadly run by r etards.
Mike
The family parking on the pavement along Great Preston Road
Son in Law works for Island Roads
“Says a lot about Island Roads”
It’s about time something was done to Stop idiots parking on Pavements.
I would have any vehicle except emergency service vehicles towed away and
crushed.
Nothing surprises me on this lawless island.
Parking on Pavements also allowed causing obstruction to other motorists and pedestrians
A yellow Vauxhall Corsa REG HJ62ZPV is permanently parked on the pavement outside the
The Old Council Houses along Great Preston Road bringing motorists to a complete stop.
It’s about time the Highways Dept done something about backward idiots
Parking on Pavements.
Fine them and clamp them and have the vehicles towed away.
The Council and Island Roads are clueless when it comes to Road Safety
How can they let 1 problem family cause misery to the people of the
Island by letting 1 moron park on the pavement bringing making the
Road unpassable for motorists, with cars parked on both sides of the Road
it is impossible for vehicles to pass.
1 problem family is turning Great Preston Road into a 1 way Road.
The District Steward for Ryde is like the invisible man.
Island Roads are also useless.
Double Yellow lines are required to Stop idiots parking outside the
Old Council Houses along Great Preston Road.
I though it was the law to have a dog, clipped in with a lead or proper harness, so this could never happen ? They should NEVER be loose in a car..
The law don’t give a ass, it’s good to they are trying to work.
Even the dogs are nutters over there lol
