24-year-old Jake Clarke has been handed a 12-month driving ban after pleading guilty to drug driving – but he was only caught due to some dodgy electrics on his car.
Clarke, of Sandcroft Avenue in Ryde, appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday charged with 1 count of drug driving.
The court heard from Liz Miller, prosecuting, that Police had been dealing with another incident in Ventnor on 28th July this year when they sighted Clarke’s Renault Modus. The car had a headlight out, the rear number plate lights were not working and every time the vehicle braked the hazard lights would turn on.
Officers decided to pull the vehicle over on Ventnor Esplanade and carry out some roadside checks. A drugs wipe was carried out and indicated a positive result for cannabis.
Oscar Vincent, defending, said that his client – who has been an inpatient at Sevenacres for the past 2 months – used cannabis as a way to calm down and sleep. Mr Vincent explained that Clarke suffers from schizoaffective disorder and at the time of the incident was showing symptoms of mania.
Magistrates handed Jake Clarke a 12-month driving ban and fined him £120, as well as ordering him to pay £85 costs with a £34 surcharge.

Why do we have to hear their defending teams excuses in every report….is it to make us feel sorry for them …
No, It is called ” a fair trial ” !

I thought inpatients weren’t supposed to be out or they would be called out patients.
I always wondered why we park on driveways and drive on parkways but hey ho
One has to ask with, with those conditions should the person have been driving at all ?
Cannabis psychosis is a very dangerous mental health condition. Not many people know that and the risk of getting it is like Russian Roulette. Feeling lucky ?
