A disposable BBQ being used on the balcony of a penthouse apartment in Newport has led to a call out for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service tonight (Friday).
2 appliances from Newport are on scene at Drill Hall Road, where firefighters have hauled aloft a hose reel jet (HRJ) to the top floor of an apartment block – where Xtreme Play once stood.
It has been confirmed to Island Echo that the alert has been sparked by the use of disposable BBQ.
No injuries have been reported.
Prior to the fire service’s arrival, locals reported hearing 2 or 3 loud bangs.
The area is currently being dampened down using the HRJ.
Ant Westwood, Station Manager for HIWFRS, is tonight issuing a reminder to all households to consider the appropriate use of items such as disposable BBQs, which should not be used on balconys or in enclosed spaces.

Why do people not think of the risks before they do such stupid acts????
Penthouse ? Think they are Council flats. Did they find the weed on way up?.
Drill Hall Rd facing out to the car park. Not council though..
It’s a small disposable bbq, on an outside concrete/metal balcony. Did they use Jet Fuel to try to ignite the thing? Or pillows as an ignition source? Possibly no access to any tap water to pour over the tiny, smouldering tray? The mind boggles.
What a waste of resources. Who in their right minds has a barbecue on a balcony?
You’d be surprised! With the amount of tinder dry vegetation around it’s time these disposable BBQ packs were banned. Many people don’t dispose of them wisely, if at all.
These should be banned after all the reports last year.
The shops can help by not selling them. Our local shop has a stack of them inside the door, how irresponsible is that?
People seem to lack basic common sense these days.
I’m sure it says in the contract if rented no bbqs? It’s actually just common sense, oh they have none?
Air a bit thin up there I guess for brain to work properly
Perhaps the users should be sent a bill.
IF as suggested they are ‘social housing’ then the occupants would either be ‘in pov er tee’ or claiming for some addhd or other syndrome child, so although affording all the ‘nice’ things in life, cannot find the (our) money for ‘fines’, which we would be paying anyway.
Needs to evict them, could have been a blazing inferno.
Penthouse!! Lol!! Whatever next!!
