Hampshire Constabulary has put a dispersal order in place for the Sandown area in response to ongoing issues around anti-social behaviour.
Under section 34 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, Police have activated the order in areas that feature in the map below.
It comes as a result of anti-social behaviour, underage drinking and verbal abuse directed at the public, as well as criminal damage, including arson, at the derelict Ocean Hotel. In the past 48 hours alone, youths have been trying to cause damage at the Sandringham Hotel, whilst being verbally abusive and using racist language.
A 17-year-old boy has already been arrested for breaching the dispersal order. He was taken home and will be interviewed under caution next week.
Efforts in partnership with the council to urge the owners of the Ocean Hotel to improve the security of the site remain ongoing, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Operation Spider has also been set up by the South Wight Neighbourhoods Policing Team which will target the problems and the people causing them longer term.
How does a dispersal order work?
Anyone who is committing, or is deemed likely to commit, ASB in the specific area will be ordered to disperse. Those who don’t comply will be liable for arrest and children will be taken home by Police.
The order is in force until 22:00 on Friday night.

im the 17y old, I don’t hang around with kids they are all nearly my age and most of these allegations are false I did not shout racial abuse at people and did not cause any damage to that hotel the cctv will prove it all. I’m not a scumbag you would know that if you know me
You are still a ‘ kid ‘ you are not an adult. If you think you are, then why were you hangi9ng around those people, why di9d you not try stopping them. Why are you not studying, learning something to progress your future… instead of hanging around the streets, smoking, drinking drugs, a possibility too !!
It’s time to make it law that the low life know where their feral brats are, and to put curfews and tags on the feral brats so that plod knows where they are. Until this happens, nothing will change, and the do gooders need to be told to keep their noses out and to stop encouraging the problem
