A car that has broken down on The Downs is causing significant tailbacks in both directions this morning (Wednesday).
The car has come to a stop near the junction with Newport Shute, resulting in traffic backing up to Lime Kiln Shute. Queues are also forming in the other direction towards Downend.
Recovery has been arranged but in the meantime, members of the public are directing traffic under give and take.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being, diverting via Newchurch and Arreton or Wootton.
Havenstreet remains closed for utility works, complicating local diversions.
UPDATE @ 10:00 – The vehicle has now been moved and traffic is free flowing again.
Although a fire engine was seen at the incident, it’s understood crews were seeking a road traffic collision involving a car and a tree.
Police & fire turned up, then turned around and left. Credit to the two woman directing traffic as they handled it as best as any member of the public could.
In the picture there is a police car they should have a towing strop on board so unless the vehicle will not move why cant it be towed to a safer place of the main drag problem solved, its not rocket science.
Don’t try that on a battery car..you will wreck the drives.
Dangerous towing a broken down car, no servo assist on the brakes, no power steering, and if it’s automatic it might be stuck in drive=no tow.
No it’s not rocket science you’re right, just basic mechanics!
I didnt suggest towing a automatic vehicle as thats a big no no but if circumstances suggest towing a manual a short distance as i suggested for safety of other road users i wouldnt think twice.
It’s not broken down, it’s in a ditch with the driver’s airbag deployed.
Think that is the other one.
