Police have closed The Downs Road in both directions this lunchtime (Monday) as a result of a road traffic collision.
The incident has occurred several hundred yards east of the Hare & Hounds traffic light junction.
Emergency services were called to the crash shortly before 12:45.
It’s the 4th time that emergency services have been called to the area of Downend in the past 2 weeks following 3 collisions at the busy junction.
UPDATE @ 14:21 – Island Echo understands that the incident, involving just 1 motorcycle, was caused by a bird pooing on the rider’s helmet visor, causing him to lose control.
A 17-year-old male has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital with what is suspected to be a broken ankle.
The road has now re-opened.

So many accidents in the same place, it cannot all be bad driving?
Its a darn good job that Cows don’t fly then.
Best send for the Bishop, there seems to be evil forces here.
Highly likely it involves a partially sighted OAP
Apparently it was a 17 year old who couldn’t handle a bird crapping on him. Snowflakes, the lot of them.
or just a island driver
Lol you don’t drive in Portsmouth much then they are all nobs over here
Another idiotic poor contribution from dear Bob ( or is it Bob the knob) banging on about OAP’s when it clearly states that a 17 yr old male was conveyed to hospital with a suspected broken ankle. Obviously cannot read very well. Hope the rider gets better soon. Don’t be too embarrassed Bob we all make mistakes – have a nice day.
Maybe it’s you that is partially sighted, it says 17 year old
TROLL ALERT
Spelt ‘Throttle’
apparently bob you are partially sighted as the item says he is 17, struggling with all the big words are you.
Just waiting for the keyboard Warriors to come up with some more stupid comments
Ok here’s one. I bet an Audi was involved
Birds drive audis now do they?
If this incident is at the lights again it’s due to people running the red and the timing set on the lights. Island roads have reduced the timing so as soon as one goes red the next is green allowing no time for chances or traffic held up by a cyclist
Has to be a cyclist, can’t be anything to do with cars with stupid stop start technology.
More idiots will be along soon…
I hope for your partner’s sake, you’re less predictable in bed!
I’m sure Mrs palmer and her 5 lovely daughters are regularly entertained.
FGS PEOPLE…….pay attention behind wheel.sooooo many crashes.never even know about ones not reported
nuts
iv been at roundabouts or passing junctions and see drivers just pull out or drive on through never even looking once! wth
More bad driving on the IW
what a load of crap !!!
Spot on there, Bob.
It might have been a very large bird who had had a very large breakfast?
Hope the lad is ok. Obviously not good luck for him.
Guess the rider should have flipped the visor up eh ? A bit more riding experience OFF ROADS might be good idea… and what about an emergency stop ?? Instead of dropping the bike ?? Supposed to learn that before the test, then prove it on test..
Dont always agree with your comments but on this occasion and dealing many a rider and driver in my previous career in the emergency services for many decades i totally agree with you.
…and wear proper protective clothing.I ALWAYS wear boots and armoured clothing no matter how hot the weather.
Don’t just wear shorts and trainers !!!!
That’s why I came off, my visor got stuck as tried lifting it up and then I lost control of the bike went into a hedge, back end slid out and crushed my ancle, I was wearing boots, jeans and an rst leather jacket.
From someone who has ridden motorcycles of all power levels for 40+ years, this sounds like an excuse. I’ve had more than bird poop hit my visor (including a pigeon), never caused me crash. Some 17 year olds do ride well and have well maintain bikes, but most ride like idiots (like the Ryde Bike Gang) and have illegally modified bikes. I wonder which he falls into. The later giving all motorcycle riders a bad name.
Like the tosspot that roars up and down Pan with a very loud exhaust and no regard for the speed limit, bright yellow fairing on it. And the idiot in the souped up blue car that does the same and makes illegal right turns at the bottom of Furrlongs
More sad comments from sad people
fred enough is enough learn how to ride and please stop commenting about kids
This^^
I took a pigeon full in the face which went thru my viser at about 60mph a few years ago. It broke my nose, dam near blinded me and proper rang my bell, and no, I didnt bin it.
i agree, i’ve been riding scooters for nearly 40 years, had bird poop, pigeons, bugs, litter etc hit my visor and never lost control. its just an excuse for riding too fast for the road conditions
Basically what happened is that a bird crapped on my visor and I tried lifting it up but it got stuck, that’s what’s made me lose control, I appreciate your comment tho, I was wearing protective gear as well, I was wearing a pair of boots, an rst leather jacket and a pair of jeans.
That’s sh#t luck poor guy get well soon
Seriously, is this April the 1st, or just another motorcyclist riding too fast and losing control
Nope aha, sat here with a broken leg and tore all the tendons in my leg
Anyone else noticed the gang of bikers racing the ryde streets in the early hours of the morning recently. Can’t miss them their bikes make so much noise, they all have need their bikes crushed and their license ripped up
Yep race along Appley Road from Oakfield School towards Seaview and bacj again
There not a gang of bikers silly there 3 kids on 125cc upton road reported them but police don’t care they ride like twats round ryde all night while there are 6 police cars parked a ryde police station
Or a lot of tacks thrown out on the road as they make that awful farty sound as they roar thru… “just a joke Ryde Bike gang” back to your cbeebies
If that came from the rear end of one of the gulls, I can assure you it would have been zero visibility, things happen on a motorcycle in a split second, it’s all well and good the voices of experience chiming in, it was just a lad who hasnt had the benefit of years experience before “shit happens”
Good luck fella, hope you’re not to badly hurt.
Bird poo. BULL SH%T. more like.
Just to let you guys know, I’m ok. My ankle is broken and I just have a few cuts and scrapes. Before anyone asks, yes, a bird did poo all over my visor which blocked my line of sight and when I went to lift up my visor it got stuck and I lost control of the bike
Firstly get well soon and when fit enough get back on the bike asap. Don’t lose confidence. Secondly take no notice of the idiotic posters just sad trolls. Take care mate.
get well soon dont take any notice of these idiots on here most of them cant drive a car let alone a bike take care
If a bird poos on you that means good luck , not so in this case .
I know the island motorcyclists are the most incompetent in the U.K but this takes the biscuit what a pratt.
I’ve heard of bull —- cause trouble but never bird —-
nature getting its own back, perhaps the bird could swing past Ryde Esplanade and crap on the young idiot with the backfiring motorbike
