The alleged driver of a car that crashed on the outskirts of Godshill last night (Sunday) has been arrested on suspicion of a string of offences, including stealing the small hatchback which later burst into flames.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 33-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking without consent, being unfit to drive through drink or drugs, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and breaching COVID-19 restrictions.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a Seat Ibiza crashed into a parked van at Sanford, between Whiteley Bank and Godshill, at around 20:00 last night. The Seat then burst into flames.
4 people were injured in the smash. 3 people were taken to hospital with fracture injuries, 2 of them are described as serious. 1 other sustained a laceration that required stitching.
The 3 passengers, 2 men and a woman, are all in their 20s.
The road remained closed until just gone midnight.
UPDATE @ 15:03 – Police say that the 33-year-old has since been de-arrested as enquiries into the incident continue.
If anyone has any information/dash cam footage about this incident or saw the vehicle prior to the collision, contact Police by calling 101 and quoting 44200147461.

What a surprise once again more scum from Sandown
errr we’re not all scum in Sandown mate anymore than Bembridge are all druggies
Absolutely not, however there is a huge element….. just sayin
There is a pattern of offenders from Sandown, Ryde etc…..
What factual statistics are you quoting from for your “pattern”, please? Perception can be far removed from facts, sometimes.
why pick on these towns? stupid comment
stop winging, its pathetic, just read the news, no one is interested in your warped opinions
If it’s proved to be true then give the twat the max punishment
Had to be from sandown or ryde the only towns that’s don’t seem to be in lockdown
So, you have been touring the island and continually checked for compliance!
He clearly hasnt been to Newport
Chav central!!…….
Here here. Couldn’t have put it better, Jase.
oh you really do live in isolation don’t you, I doubt you wouldn’t have to look too far from the end your nose to find something happening in your area !!!!
Oi! That’s unfair! There are all of us in Ryde doing the right thing! I’m sure wherever you are from idiots are most likely having indoor lock ins! Get your story right mate!
stop winging, its pathetic, just read the news, no one is interested in your warped opinions
Just unbelievable
Not unbelievable, just normal for the Isle of Wight, where druggery is everywhere and law enforcers are disinterested..
Oh he wil b ok probably get a smack on the wrist get told not to do it again while the owner of the car is careless and could be a key work….total scum bag from sandown AGAIN
Probably get sent on a thinking course, presuming that the CPS bother prosecuting in the first place
stop winging about individual towns, its boring and ignorant
I hope he faces the full arm of the law. Total disgrace. We don’t want to hear down the line that he has received no prison sentence. He certainly broke enough laws
Having visited the island since a young child i always thought what a wonderful place to live almost immune from the sad goings on i see in North kent.Sadly from reading this site almost daily i can only say you have joined the rest of the uk,no longer a sanctuary, what a shame, you still have a beautiful island but the bad element are running wild ,so so sad.
Remember that these incidents are newsworthy, whereas lots of truly wonderful Island news isn’t. I can assure you that it’s a beautiful place to live and it’s people are largely good, quite unlike this dangerous little drugged up twerp, sadly.
It’s true. I remember the days when Sandown was the place to be, a lovely place to go of an evening. You could walk along the High Street there 9 o clock at night and there would be shops open and people everywhere, (in a good way) happy atmosphere, nice places to go like The Blue Lagoon, all gone now. I don’t know how it happened, but the contrast between what it is like now and how it used to be, couldn’t be more different, Such a shame.
Sadly, worried, I totally agree.
These comments seriously
I really take offence at comments re ryde
I’m working on front line for NHS and both protect myself and others as well as adhere to lockdown
Every town and city right across this country has its bad element so please stop being so judgemental and thank your lucky stars you live in such a relatively lovely place where most people are pleasant and law abiding
You are absolutely correct. The iow is a lovely place to live. And most people are friendly (especially compared to most…not all… of the so called mainland.) Still, I love watching stories like this, it gives a little spice to the Island !!!”
Yes. – Please take these comments seriously Hampshire Constabulary…
Right, let’s get this straight!! So he got arrested for 5 things! Then de arrested?? So he was he dunk or on drugs? Did he take the vehicle or not? Was it dangerous driving or not? I don’t get why he hasn’t been arrested for at least one of these?? Please correct me i just don’t get understand how you can arrest someone for all those offensives then drop them!?
Well said RON

The ferels are out again.
A nice long prison sentence needed.
stop winging, its pathetic, just read the news, no one is interested in the warped opinions expressed by the wingers
