Emergency services are attending a serious road traffic collision involving a car and a van in Sandford this evening (Sunday), in which one vehicle has burst into flames.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has sent 3 fire appliances and a rescue tender – from Shanklin, Ventnor and Newport – to Shanklin Road between Whitely Bank and Godshill.
Island Echo readers have reported seeing plumes of smoke billowing into the sky ahead of firefighters dousing the flames.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has 3 ambulance crews and a senior officer on scene.
The hatchback car collided with a parked van in the ‘S’ bends near to Redhill Lane at around 20:00.
Police have closed the road in both directions and have established a cordon around the scene.
UPDATE @ 20:50 – At least 2 casualties have been conveyed to hospital with paramedics still on scene.
Graham Orchard, Duty Officer for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, has confirmed that crews have tackled a car fire following an impact with a second vehicle.
The road is expected to remain closed for several hours as Island Roads have been called to erect a hard road closure.
Southern Vectis buses serving Route 3 are currently on diversion.
“Route 3 20:05 has been diverted via Whitwell to Upper Ventnor and will not serve stops in between.
“Route 3 20:19 Wroxall to Newport has turned and operate via Canteen Lane to Winford.”
UPDATE @ 21:10 – The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has now stood down from the incident with at least 3 casualties conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
Police remain on scene as they investigate the circumstances of the collision.

UPDATE @ 00:20 – Shanklin Road has now re-opened in both directions. Southern Vectis Route 3 buses will revert to a normal route.
UPDATE MONDAY – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were alerted by Hampshire Fire & Rescue in relation to a collision between a car and van in Shanklin Road, Godshill at 8.08pm on April 26.
“It was initially believed to be a serious incident. We did attend but the incident was subsequently downgraded and was recorded as minor injury”.
