A much-loved cat could be put to sleep after being run over on Carisbrooke Road, with an urgent fundraising appeal launched to help cover the £6,050 cost of saving his life.
Gizmo, affectionately known as Gizzles, suffered a fractured pelvis after being struck by a vehicle last week, with the driver reportedly continuing without stopping.
Shannon Corr witnessed the incident and watched as the injured cat ran to safety before rushing to his aid and taking him to a vet for emergency treatment.
She subsequently managed to trace Gizmo’s owner, Jessica Fuster, who has been left facing the heartbreaking prospect of losing her beloved pet.
Veterinary examinations have revealed that Gizmo requires surgery to repair his fractured pelvis, with the operation estimated to cost £5,500.
A further £550 has already been incurred in veterinary bills, bringing the total cost to £6,050.
The family has been warned that, without the necessary surgery, putting Gizmo to sleep may be the only option.
The situation is made even more distressing by the fact that Jessica’s husband is currently battling brain cancer, with the family already dealing with the emotional and practical challenges of his illness.
Now, Shannon has launched a fundraising appeal in the hope that generous Islanders can help give Gizmo a fighting chance.
In her appeal, Shannon said:
“It’s heartbreaking to think that this much-loved boy could lose his chance to recover because of the enormous cost of treatment.
“No family should have to face such a heartbreaking decision while also struggling with the financial pressure of an unexpected veterinary emergency.”
The fundraiser aims to raise £6,050 to cover the surgery and veterinary treatment already received.
