Nearly 200 drivers were caught speeding across the Isle of Wight last month, new figures show.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that 190 drivers were caught driving over the speed limit during the month of September.
A total of 22 different locations were visited by the Island’s 2 Roads Policing officers, the Armed Response team and mainland Roads Policing officers – the latter travelling across the Solent with unmarked bikes and cars for targeted days of action.
They were out on 44 different occasions.
In August, some 198 drivers were caught on 28 occasions.
A spokesperson for the force has said:
“We know poor driving standards, including speeding, are a common concern to local residents on the Island, which is why we have been providing you with these regular updates, so you can see a small snapshot of some of the work that goes into this.
“Speeding is, of course, just one of the issues motorists face on the road network, and we have a number of teams and other initiatives running on the Island that tackle the broader spectrum of offending to keep our roads safer.”

“Our work is much more effective when we receive information and intelligence from the public about specific issues and problem areas. What we need to know is was it just some driver doing 5mph over the limit on the way to work, or those driving like loons, hammering a car at tens of mph over the limit?
Do they just await easy but safe roads like the milly road and the road from Yaverland to Sandown, where much of both roads has few if any pedestrians, barely any side roads, and vision good, to make such not a risk to the innocent public?
Seems now all fines are about taking the easy option to catch a ‘number’ NOT the really dangerous offenders.
Hidden mobile Cameras would pay off the national debt, IF used.
So very often, being just 5 mph over the limit is a good indication that the driver is breaking some other law too. So 100% worth while to pull them over too. So often they don’t have a full licence or the car has no insurance.
But I go 5mph over all the time, I don’t want to be pulled over. Just pull over the other people!
What a comment, the limits are set to protect all road users not just to slow motorists down. I’m sure you’d feel differently about a child being hit at 35mph rather than 30mph.
Count yourself lucky in London they’re enforcing at 22mph in the 20 limits!

Now that lovely builder chap and his daughter no longer park on the pavement, one was led to believe that Great preston road’s troubles would all be over?
Perhaps Father and disabled daughter’s parking, did do as I suggested, and actually ‘slowed’ the traffic along that road.
Let’s hope they can remove the yellow lines for these decent ‘working’ people, a rare attribute in that area I know.

so they caught a fraction over 4 drivers per visit on presumably an 8 hour shift, is this really a good use of 16 police man hours assuming only 2 officers were present?
Exactly,if they came down my road would catch 8/10 an hour early morning, early evening/ night doing 50+ in 30. But no they target those doing a little over in middle of day when least accidents , it’s money making and for image!. Accidents happen for all sorts of reasons,5mph over limit probably not. We have cloned car’s, stolen,drug/drink driving, unlicensed etc that cause 90% yet when caught there punishment is less. Eg a delivery driver could get 3pts,£1000 fine and his own insurance up another £1000, might not be able to hire a vehicle or even loose job. Yet those scum who have no license, Insurance ,drug/drink ,get £35 fine and £85 costs. How is it proportional.

Bloody good show, well done to the Police officers. So many more waiting to be caught. I wonder if these numptys learn their lesson and they slow down or just carry on and continue speeding? Would be interesting to know.
Hopefully the message will eventually get through and many will start to understand the ‘rules of the road’. It’s the law you know, not just an island thing! DOH

Carisbrooke road speed way needs a trap in the evenings ASAP.
they need to pop over to brighstone side of the island and stop the locals most have been drinking in there pubs. lots of cars with no tax no mot’s and you never see a police car over this side

Prevention is better than cure.
Place more traffic calming measure around the island like those
Placed in Perowne Way.
So many places in the UK are reducing speed to 20 mph
I believe it will only be a matter of time before IW Council
will introduce similar rules on Island roads.
