The Isle of Wight Council has apologised to a Shorwell resident after a bin lorry’s broken hydraulic hose left her driveway an oily mess last month.
The incident occurred on Friday 6th December when a bin lorry, in the process of collecting the rubbish at a property in the rural village, burst a hydraulic brake hose.
Subsequently, oil was spilled all over the owner’s driveway and – despite the efforts of the bin men who attempted to cover it up with grit – rainwater washed the oil all down the driveway and into a water source down land.
Since the spillage, a great deal of finger pointing between local authorities took place before the stain was partially cleaned earlier some 10-days later (Monday 16th December).
Speaking on the matter, the Isle of Wight Council has said:
‘’The Isle of Wight Council’s waste service provider made the council aware of the hydraulic leak on the 6th December, and a sub-contractor was notified that day to clean the spill. It is disappointing that this was not cleaned immediately. The council and our waste provider had raised repeated requests for the leak to be cleared. We received confirmation from the sub-contractor this was completed on the 17th December. We again apologise for any distress the delay in rectifying this matter may have caused.’’
Makes a change from leaving the content of bins in the road and the loss of the green liner!
And leaving bins blocking pavements making it
difficult for disabled persons in mobility scooters
or persons pushing prams.
So, a Council Contractors vehicle has an engineering mishap, yet polluting products are washed into the local watercourse…
If this was a private individual, the Council and the Department for the Environment would be down on you like a ton of bricks.
there are recognised procedures and equipment to be used for fuel/oil/chemical spills to prevent water contamination.
WHO (if anyone) will be held responsible and fined for this pollution?
