Firefighters attended a small fire involving a compost heap that then spread to a nearby shed in St Helens this morning (Monday).
Ryde fire crews were mobilised shortly after 11:00 to Downs View Road.
It’s understood the fire started at a compost heap and quickly spread to a nearby garden shed, with firefighters using hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.
The crew from Ryde were only on the scene for around 20 minutes before standing down.
Retained firefighters from East Cowes were deployed to Ryde Fire Station in the meantime on standby.

Well done firefighters again
they talk about a hose-pipe ban, why not a ban on outdoor household fires while the weather is so hot. not a great hardship is it.
every fire starts as a small fire. by saying it’s small doesn’t excuse the clown doing it in this weather.
Compost heaps can start fires so easily.
I see the self righteous mouth breathers are all over this already.
Good chance that it started spontaneously, but that wouldn’t give the grunters anything to gloat over.
It was a compost heap. You do not set fire to compost heaps, so anyone saying this was a “bonfire” is wrong.
By their very nature compost heaps get hot inside as the contents rot down, and they can easily self-ignite in this sort of weather.
Mine isn’t in direct sunlight for more than an hour a day, but it was smoking when I turned it over to mix it a couple of days ago – a not infrequent occurrence.
I doubt those making the self-righteous comments have the intelligence to know that, or the basic sense to check their facts before posting and making themselves look stupid.
