The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is hosting a community event tomorrow (Tuesday) where they will be joined by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Hampshire Constabulary.
The free event, which is being held at Newport Fire Station between 10:30 and 14:30, will also have attendees from the Stroke Association who will offer free blood checks to visitors. Anyone who has a check will be given a free voucher for the Karate and Self Defence Club in Newport.
Firefighters and staff from the ambulance service and police will give advice and information on staying safe over the Christmas period.
The event will culminate in the traditional switch on of the station’s Christmas tree lights at 16:30. This year, Toby, Max and Harry Poynter, the sons of the late firefighter Martin Poynter, will do the honours.
During the day, a £1000 cheque will be presented to The Martin Poynter Trust. The money was raised by firefighters Dave Hunt and Luke Hingert who organised a boxing event at Cowes Yacht Haven in October.
The Trust was started by Martin Poynter’s family and friends in memory of Martin, who died of a stroke in February of this year, age 49. The Trust aims to raise funds for the Stroke Association by holding events on the Island.
There will also be a car wash held at Newport Fire Station on Saturday 5th December from 09:00 to 14:00.
