Needles Coastguard Rescue Team responded to reports of clothes and shoes left on the beach at Colwell this evening (Saturday).
HM Coastguard received a 999 call from a concerned member of the public after the belongings were left unattended for an extended period of time, sparking fears that somebody could be in distress in the water.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked to investigate the found clothing alongside the RNLI Lifeboat from Lymington.
As the initial Coastguard Rescue Officers mustered at the scene, the owner of the clothes who had gone swimming returned to the beach.
At this point, the crews were stood down and the incident was declared a false alarm with good intent.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
