A Newport woman who stole coleslaw, apples, tuna, frankfurters and other foodstuffs from Sandown’s Co-op is to be sentenced in December.
Zoe Davies, 43, of Barton Road in Newport, admitted theft from a shop, possession of a bladed article in a public place and possession of a controlled drug of class-B when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday 8th October).
Prosecuting, Lauren McConnell, told the court that on the 11th September a shoplifter entered The Co-op on High Street in Sandown and walked out with a variety of goods including: coleslaw, apples, tuna, pasta salads and frankfurters worth a total of £34.15, without making any attempt to pay.
The court heard how a local PCSO was able to identify Davies on CCTV, with the 43-year-old arrested a day later.
Upon her arrest and during a search a lock knife and a small amount of cannabis resin was found. When questioned, Davies said the knife was used as a food preparation tool and the cannabis was for her own personal use.
Davies has a total of 14 convictions for 43 offences.
Defending Davies, Oscar Vincent told the court that the items stolen were not items that can be sold on and that instead Davies was stealing to survive. He also added that Davies was homeless at the time of the incident, sleeping rough on the streets.
The case was adjourned until the 20th December to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled.
