The future of the Island’s Carpetright store remains in doubt after it was revealed that the Gunville-based shop wasn’t included in a takeover deal. It was revealed on Friday 12th July that the leading flooring retailer had appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as administrators. Last week, Tapi Carpets & Floors announced that they had bought the Carpetright brand name, the company’s intellectual property, 2 warehouses and 54 stores. However, the Isle of Wight store – located on Taylor Road – hasn’t been acquired by Tapi. The Southampton Hedge End store has been saved. Some 6 years ago, 92 stores across the UK were closed. It’s said that financial pressures as a result of a cyberattack earlier this year are to blame, with Carpetright seeking a ‘period of protection’ while negotiations on its sale continue. Zelf Hussain, Joint Administrator, said:
“Carpetright has fallen victim to challenges facing many retailers, especially those selling big ticket items. A mixture of factors, including a big reduction in consumer spending due to cost of living pressures, lower home sales and a debilitating cyber attack made it impossible for the business to continue in its current form. “The sale of some stores and the brand to Tapi has allowed over 300 jobs to be saved, and gives the Carpetright brand the chance to continue and flourish under its new ownership. “However, it is deeply saddening that for the remainder of the workforce there will be redundancies. We are committed to helping those affected and will make sure redundancy claims are processed as quickly as possible. In collaboration with Tapi, we will assist in efforts to help individuals find new jobs elsewhere. “We know this is an uncertain time for many of those affected and want to thank all the staff for the support they have given the company in these difficult circumstances.”

Do people still buy carpets? How quaint.
Bless you!
What an utterly ridiculous comment!? You’ve made yourself look like a right xxxx
No doubt that this will be classed as one of Labour’s “grey” sites and will be crammed full of flats and/or houses, some of which will laughably be called “affordable”.
IF the free contraception from the NHS was used , then a couple even on min wage if living at home could save much of that £900+ a month for a deposit.
But selfish spongers would rather have a ‘kid’ , get others to fund it, the free rent and council tax, then bleat poverty , and “we can’t afford a house of our own “
The dim and thoughtless selfish were never home owners, yet are the ones having the most children despite living in poverty. Selfish or thick or both inflicting their poverty onto their children to do the same
Go back to school “I. Say” or stay of the booze before posting. What you said was not even close to being coherent.
Tories been in power for 14 years, all the issues that you rage against are the issues your tory mates created.
Perfect site to build new social housing on. I hope the IW Council can work with the new Govt, and the Islands housing associations to get this sorted as soon as possible. A great site to test the new housing targets. There’s so many people living in poverty the Island, it just has to happen.
If we didn’t have massive immigration we would have plenty of houses, thanks Tony Blair….
Wrong, Tories and Brexit have created mass immigration. Labour have now implemented proper processing, allowing people to be sent back, a new Border Control Force, and finances to break the gangs. They managed this in only a matter of days, why didn’t the Tories do it?
There is little chance of any new social housing going to local people. As we now have a Labour Government there is no Rowanda and no Bibby Stockholm, all these illegal immigrants( which are still arriving in vast numbers everyday ) are now going to be housed in social housing spread out across all councils across the country. As the Deputy PM said, ” everywhere will take their fair share” They are easing the planning regulations, so watch out, coming to a place near you soon.
We need migrant workers as white English people are so lazy, nothing gets done.
Not sure why you got marked down. With the current welfare system the young English are
lazy scroungers.
Not sure how Dreams in the other end of the building will feel about that.
The island needs more land for properties to be built on,
great for employment and trade.
No loss, my last visit in 2023 was a grim experience, more like carpetshite than carpetright, didn’t buy anything mainly because of rude staff and poor customer service.
I went in there a few years back, prepared to spend a few thousand on new carpets, but I felt ‘invisible’ to the shop staff. I had the colour and pile in my mind but nobody came over to assist. I felt that the staff didn’t care so I walked back out. Customer service has gone down over the years, with people just wanting your cash.
Looking in the wrong places for your wares
That is a bit of a rug pull.
