Those attending carnivals on the Island this summer are being urged not to throw objects at those on parading floats after an incident occurred at Ventnor Carnival earlier this week.
The incident saw Shanklin Carnival royalty – whilst on their Mary Poppins-themed float – targeted with foreign objects thrown from the crowd during Ventnor Main Carnival yesterday (Wednesday).
Island Echo understands that items including fun snaps and coins were among things being thrown, whilst some participants were squirted with water pistols whilst parading the streets of the South Wight town.
It is believed that the items were purchased from street sellers who, Ventnor Carnival has said, were not authorised to be selling.
In years gone by, members of the public would throw coins onto the passing floats during carnival processions in a way to raise funds for each Carnival Association. This has since stopped and now committee members walk beside floats with buckets collecting change.
In a post on their Facebook page, a Shanklin Carnival spokesperson said:
“As much as we had a lovely time last night, there were some young people in the crowd who were throwing things at the Princesses.”
A Ventnor Carnival Spokesperson has said:
“These are not allowed to be used in any carnivals, throwing bangers etc are a health and safety issue and people spend lots of time and money on costumes/floats and do not want them spoilt or damaged.”

Don’t be ugly on the inside…
There should be a float of shame filled with young offenders. Locals should be able to throw things at them.
Some vile, nasty children and adults about who enjoy causing pain to the innocent.
Likely all bought up on tax credits, result of unwanted one night stands, but more financially beneficial to the parent, rarely parents to ‘keep it’ to gain a free house and thousands a year for doing squat.
Hence the child is unloved, and left to do as it wants, and that is taking out their anger on society, even better if they can do so to those who can’t hit back.
Too scared to show their face when they do it. Scum bags.
When I was with Wroxall Carnival one year in Newport we lead off from Carisbrooke high school and some kids started throwing nails at the queeens float with luck we were further back but I know Newport and a couple of the others had it done
