Significant improvement has been made at Carisbrooke College according to Ofsted, who say the Newport school is taking effective action in order to become a ‘good’ school.
Carisbrooke College went into Special Measures back in April 2013, however by April of this year those measures had been removed. Now, Ofsted have reported significant improvement under the leadership of headteacher Peter Shaw.
Since the last inspection, Ofsted inspectors say that Mr Shaw has worked with a relentless drive to address the areas for improvement. Ably supported by a skilled senior leadership team, he is said to have drawn up a precise and comprehensive action plan that shows who is responsible for delivering improvements and there are appropriate timescales and measures of success along the way.
Highlights of the report, which has been released today (Friday) include:
• Improvement in attendance which currently is in line with national figures
• Exam results have shown rapid improvement with the amount of students gaining 5 good GCSEs which is now close the national average
• Teaching is improving; a much greater proportion is good and inadequate teaching has been oradicated
• Behaviour at the school is improving with the college policy being more consistently applied
• Leaders provide a greater range of opportunities for students’ spiritual, social, moral and cultural development across the curriculum.
Cllr Chris Whitehouse, who represents Newport West Ward in which the school is located says:
“This really is an excellent endorsement of the improvements that have been made at Carisbrooke College.
“The efforts of the Principal, Pete Shaw, have been truly Herculean. He and his leadership team and all the teachers can be proud of the progress they have made”.
