A car has ploughed head-on into a lamp post in Newport tonight (Sunday).
A silver Mitsubishi Colt has come to an abrupt stop on St George’s Way just off the Asda roundabout.
Police have closed the Newport bound carriageway between Asda and Matalan as they investigate the circumstances behind the collision, which occurred at around 23:00.
It is thought the driver made off from the scene on foot, heading towards the town.
Island Roads are attending the scene to rectifying the damaged post.
Recovery of the vehicle is underway and the road is expected to re-open once the lamp post has been removed.
