Customers travelling on Southern Vectis Route 4 & 5 buses are being urged to close the bus windows on approach to Osborne House due to there being a large swarm of wasps in the area.
Southern Vectis issued the warning at around 11:45 this morning (Thursday) with it said that customers upstairs on their buses should close the windows when approaching the English Heritage site.
Wasps enjoy warmer and sunnier weather and tend to grow more rapidly in warmer climes.
With the weather set to remain as is for the rest of the day it is expected to be a while until the wasps ‘buzz’ off.
There is not a swarm of wasps. Wasps do not swarm (unless you disturb a nest but that is not really a swarm, and it is a silly thing to do). These are simply queen wasps looking for nest sites and starting new colonies.
My dog would disagree. A wasp landed on her and got stuck in her fur. Within 30 seconds she was covered and we both had to leg it for a few 100m. I picked at least 15 out of her fur. She was violently sick and I had to carry her about 4 miles home. She was lucky she didn’t go into shock with the amount of stings she got. I received about 8 myself. The best part of the story is I warned an elderly couple but they just shrugged and carried on in that direction. 5 minutes later they came running in my direction. Some people know better I suppose
Your dog probably disturbed a nest toward the end of the season when populations are large and tetchy. They will attack en masse in such situations. The nests are only just being started at this time of year so there are not sufficient numbers to mount an attack.
