Carter Horrix and Louis Sheasby secured the Wessex region’s 1st gold in several years at Nottingham’s Junior Inter-regional Regatta on Saturday (23rd April).
Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club rowers travelled to Nottingham to represent the Wessex region at the Junior Inter-regional regatta, the first time the event has taken place in 4 years.
The format of the regatta was changed due to high winds, with each crew racing over 1k, with the fastest three crews claiming the medals.
The boys’ J14 double of Carter Horrix and Louis Sheasby got off to a great start, taking a half a length out of their rivals in the first 6 strokes, and maintained this lead until the finish to secure the gold medal.
Kayleigh Batchelor and Ben Smith coped admirably with the conditions in their respective J16 sculling events, with Batchelor finishing just outside the medal positions in 4th and Smith 11th.
Esme Walters and Alannah Denness become the first rowers to represent the region in the ladies J16 pair, finishing in an excellent 8th position, a superb achievement considering they only changed to the sweep discipline at the club’s training camp a week earlier.
The boys’ J16 four of Arlo Adds, Ben Smith, Ollie Hatch and Fred Giemza-Pipe of Ryde RC, also finished a creditable 8th against more established opposition; again, this crew were only formed in the week leading up to the event.
Wessex team manager Garry Walters was delighted with the Island performance, helping the Wessex region secure their best-ever overall placing at the event.
