New black bins and paper/card inserts for the existing green bins are beginning to be delivered across the Isle of Wight from today (Wednesday).
Between 30th March and 9th May, all 71,000 properties on the Isle of Wight will be receiving their new bins and green bin paper/card insert. Any property deemed not suitable for a bin will instead be given a pack of three gull proof sacks.
As part of the council’s waste contract with Amey, properties have been allocated and will receive the following:
• For recycling collections – Either a green wheeled bin (you will retain your existing bin if you already have one) or a green gull-proof sack. For the green wheeled bin you will also receive a black insert box for paper/card waste. If you are allocated a green gull-proof sack you will also receive an additional blue reusable sack for your paper/card waste.
• For rubbish (non-recyclable) collections – Either a black wheeled bin or a black gull-proof sack. You should place your rubbish in bin liners inside your black wheeled bin or black gull-proof sack. Rubbish (non-recyclable) left in sacks at the kerbside separately will not be collected.
You will continue to put out your existing food caddy for food waste collection in both weeks.
Households have already begun to receive an information booklet detailing the waste changes. The booklet tells homeowners if they have been allocated a bin and paper/card insert or gull proof sacks. These booklets will be delivered by Royal Mail to all households by 4th April.
If residents do not receive their new black bin and green bin paper/card insert or gull proof sacks by 9th May, they should then contact the council.
Residents should not use their new black bin or gull proof sacks until their allocated day from 2nd May onwards as they will not be collected, and should continue to place their recycling or waste out for collection as normal until then. The information booklet also contains a collection calendar specific to each property, and an updated list of what can and cannot be recycled.
Paul Southall, Account Director for Amey on the Isle of Wight, said:
“Delivering every household on the Isle of Wight a new black bin and green bin insert or a pack of gull proof sacks is a major task which will take a number of weeks.
“The deliveries will follow the 10 different collection routes, so properties in the west of the Island will begin to receive their bins and inserts or gull proof sacks first. On some occasions, some roads may be delivered to over a two or three day period, so if your neighbour across the road has their delivery, yours will likely follow the next day so please do not contact the council.
“We are using a firm who recently delivered 1.2 million bins to residents in Birmingham, so they are very experienced.”
