A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly seriously assaulting a woman at an address in Binstead, which prompted Armed Police to be deployed to the scene earlier today (Monday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, armed officers and other colleagues responded to Newnham Road – off the main Ryde to Newport road – at just before 11:15.
Witnesses have said that a female was seen bleeding profusely ahead of the arrival of Armed Police, who shouted for a male to open the front door and put down a weapon.
It has been confirmed by Hampshire Constabulary that a female has suffered serious head injuries, although they are not life-threatening. She is being treated at St Mary’s Hospital.
The Force has also confirmed that the male suspect has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder the woman – believed to be his partner – and has also been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment, under Police escort.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called at 11.10am with reports of a serious assault at an address in Newnham Road, Binstead.
Article continues below this advertisement “A woman had suffered head injuries and has been taken to hospital. These are not deemed to be life-threatening.
“Officers have arrested a man at the scene, and he has been transported to hospital.
“The two parties involved are known to one another, and there is no wider risk to the public.
“Officers remain on scene at this time and are conducting enquiries”.

The Thames Valley Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene but was stood down whilst overhead.

I know this couple – it’s a real shock to read what’s happened, I’d never thought it possible. No specific details have been released so maybe the armchair detectives, who know nothing, should keep quiet.

So, I’m guessing that no-one has considered that this could be a case of self defence ? Men do get abused, both physically and mentally, but everyone always assumes that it’s the fella.
