Up to 5,000 rounds of ammunition have been safely removed by Bomb Disposal experts in East Cowes today (Thursday).
A member of the public located a number of historic rounds whilst metal detecting near the Norris Castle estate this morning.
Mike Dennes alerted Police at 08:27 which resulted in officers being deployed to the scene.
The assistance of the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth was requested and experts travelled across the Solent to examine the find.
Using their own detecting equipment, the bomb squad found further rounds after excavating more ground.
All of the items have now been safely removed.

I don’t think I’d prod the area like that, knowing what was buried there!
Good God grow some man. These old .303 bullets took a heavy wack on a tough recessed primer with a hardened firing pin to fire them 80 years ago.
Now with water seepage even less likely the cordite will combust
People see too many films from the US of massive explosions etc
Reality is authorities like us to believe such for the one in a million piece of ordinance which is unstable.
So that’s obviously why bomb disposal deemed it necessary to inspect and then remove said ammo. – No chance of any of the rounds exploding! Thanks for your “expert” view on the matter!
Looks like 0.303 rounds to me as used during WW11. Maybe storage by the home guard, glad it was found.
