The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) was scrambled to a medical emergency in Blackwater this afternoon (Friday). Having been tasked to the Island at around 15:20, it didn’t take long for locals to see the green and yellow liveried helicopter in the skies above the Stone Farm Solar Park. Joining the flying doctors on the ground near the Naturezones Museum were several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service – including an ambulance, Operational Commander and Critical Care Paramedic – and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. The casualty – their injuries unknown – was treated at the scene before being taken to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance. HIOWAA relocated to the helipad at St Mary’s before heading back to its Thruxton base at around 17:15.

I realise that there would have been a reason for bringing in the air ambulance, but Blackwater is about as close as you can get to St. Mary’s without actually being in the car park.
I really hope the thousands of pounds that callout cost were justified.
When was Blackwater moved close to St.Mary’s ? When I last went to Blackwater, I could have sworn that it was the opposite side of Newport from the hospital. With regard to the helicopter relocation to the hospital, I assume that a medic that had originally arrived in the helicopter to treat the injured person had accompanied the patient in the ambulance and the helicopter was going to pick up the medic from the hospital. Simples!
Hope you never need it. Maybe the Doctor and paramedics stabilised the patient and saving there life before taking them to hospital. I expect the reason it relocated to St Mary’s was because the medical crew was in the ambulance with the patient. Try reading up on the air ambulance and you might get to grips with what they do to save life as seconds count.
Did you see anywhere taken to St Mary’s?the patient may have been flown to Southampton/Pompey or Bournemouth as St Mary’s is rapidly being allowed by upper management to be a ,”can’t treat that here no facilities..and as it’s a Charity anyway and you probably have never donated a sheckle, what’s your problem?sparing by name and by donation!
If you read the report it states quite clearly that the patient was taken by ambulance to St Mary’s.
I get the fact that the air service is a charity, costing around £1973 an hour to operate and primarily for use with critical patients and run by a dedicated group of people who do an absolutely splendid job. What I don’t get that it was scrambled to the Blackwater incident, then later stood down and taken over by the land crew. Fine if the ground crew could cope and it releases the aircraft for a second mission, but the report says it took off and relocated at the St Mary’s pad, before heading back to Andover at 5:15pm. Would it have cost anymore to transport the patient to St Mary’s as it was heading that way? There must be operational reasons, but on paper, it spent two and a half hours doing nothing. I’d get it if run by the council.
So if you were the casualty you would be happy for the air ambulance not to come out and you lost your life because of the extra time taken by the land ambulance to get you to St Mary’s would you?
You didn’t read correctly Joe. I said the helicopter was on site at Blackwater, but flew back to St Mary empty. Couldn’t it have been utilised to transport the patient to the hospital as it was going there anyway. It probably landed at the hospital long before the the actual ambulance carrying the patient did.
The air paramedic might have had a crucial role in conveying the patient to and then via ambulance.
climate change induced? definitely not vaccine related, no…
This is why IE shouldn’t be writing about these “medical emergencies”.
Just look the comments.
