A bench to mark the final series of Ricky Gervais’s TV show about loss, ‘After Life’, has been placed in an East Cowes park to provide a place for people to chat and reflect.
The bench – located in Victoria Grove Park – is among 25 benches donated to local councils by streaming service Netflix and the suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
In After Life, the main character Tony – played by Gervais – is often seen sitting on a bench in the churchyard where his wife is buried. A woman – played by Penelope Wilton, whose husband is also buried in the cemetery – often sits beside him. The bench is the setting of their conversations across all three series, as Tony deals with his grief. Ricky Gervais said:

“We hope the benches will create a lasting legacy for After Life, as well as become a place for people to visit.”

East Cowes Town Council wrote on their Facebook page:
“As a fan of the series After Life, we are thrilled to have been gifted a bench of hope for our community. We are all touched by grief at some point in our lives and not only will it be a place for reflection, but it will hopefully encourage people to just sit and have a chat.”
