The adder is quite common here on the Isle of Wight and is often encountered by walkers (or their dogs) whilst out in the sun on the downs or on the Island’s many cliffs, but what is the best thing to do if you have been bitten by one?
The most important thing to remember if you have been bitten by a snake is to stay calm. Most snake bites in the UK are not serious, however, it is important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.
If you have been bitten then you should keep the part of the body that was bitten as still as you can and lie in the recovery position if you can do so.
Should you suspect that your dog has been bitten by an adder, you should take them to your vet immediately. An untreated adder bite can result in a dog becoming dehydrated, having tremors as the venom spreads around their body, and can progress to organ damage if the reaction is severe enough.

And don’t forget, adders are protected, as are all snakes in the UK
Gloves are off if they bite my dog fella!
How about keeping your dog on a lead, adders do not bite unless they are cornered or feel threatened.
I’m sick to death of dogs! need leads full time
The island esp Ryde is a very dog friendly place, get over it, dogs need to run free at times, with good recall everyone’s happy, except you. I never trust a person who doesn’t like animals, speaks volumes
With that attitude to your fellow humans you shouldn’t be allowed to own a dog.
Yeah, dog eggs everywhere. I love dogs, it’s the owners I can’t stand.
Sounds to me YOU need to be on a lead!
There is no law that says dogs have to be kept on a lead at all time just that you have to dog can not be out of control
So kill them immediately. Got it.
