Access into the seaside town of Ventnor has been made more difficult following the immediate closure of a section of Newport Road today (Monday). Island Roads has confirmed that Southern Water has informed them of the need to close a section of Newport Road- near the Graben – to complete repairs. This latest closure has been exacerbated after Leeson Road – the main route between Ventnor and Shanklin – was closed yesterday evening (Sunday) following a major landslide. As first reported by Island Echo. It was back in December 2022 was last worked on. Works were also carried out on this section of the carriageway in February 2019, in a scheme that lasted 6 weeks and saw Island Roads re-profile the camber of the road and re-open a footpath. It was hoped that the works would resolve issues for ‘some years to come’ but 3-and-a-half years later and crews are to return. As a result, all traffic heading into Ventnor has to come through the village of Whitwell until either of the routes is opened once again.
