A man in his 70s has sadly died after suffering a medical episode at the wheel of his VW Polo in Northwood this morning (Thursday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the main Newport to Cowes road at 07:42 following reports of a 2-car crash near Northwood Stores.
Medics arrived on scene to find the male driver of a blue VW Polo unresponsive.
CPR was carried out at the roadside and the male was rushed to nearby St Mary’s Hospital, but nothing could be done to save his life. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving in hospital.
The female driver of the other vehicle involved – a Ford Fiesta – was extricated from her vehicle and taken to St Mary’s Hospital as a precautionary measure.
It has now been confirmed that the 30-year-old woman suffered minor injuries in the crash.
It appears the crash was as a result of the Polo driver being taken unwell, but investigations are underway to ascertain the full circumstances of the incident.
The road has re-opened in both directions following a 4-hour closure.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has this evening said:
“We were called at 7.42am this morning (3 November) to a report of a serious collision involving a white Ford Fiesta and a blue Volkswagen Polo on Newport Road.
“Officers attended and sadly a 74-year-old man died.
“Specialist officers are supporting their next of kin”.

Condolences to the man’s family.
Yes I agree very sad
Very sad news, condolences to family and friends.
For the people who regularly class incidents as due to “Idiots” before any conformation of causes please take note, there are sadly very poor examples of driving to say the least, but take note a person with family and friends has passed away after a ” medical incident “.
Not due to being an “Idiot”.
Once again condolences to those who have lost a loved one.
Well said Kev
Hear hear! Out of respect, this is not a thread to comment on idiot drivers and parking on pavement’s. Out of respect stay on topic: A man has lost his life. Have some respect. It was very sad to hear this. Poor chap – may you rest in peace. Condolences to his family.
Very sad news
R.I.P
Dangerous driving conditions due to adverse weather conditions
But idiots still park on Pavements making it UNSAFE for pedestrians and
other Motorists
Just drove along Great Preston Road in Ryde and an idiot is parked on the pavement on
the bend outside the Council Houses
Is there NO Road Safety on this Island!
That selfish idiot always parks there. I come from South Africa and such actions there would be strictly dealt with by a very persuasive Police force.
We have small children who need to cross that busy road and he makes life even more dangerous than is necessary for them. I can see when I try to get my car parked opposite out with him doing such.
Sadly there is no law and order on the Island.
Idiots get away with what they want.
IW are useless and don’t care about people’s safety.
The island is run by morons
Hahahaha gutted
I would tow away vehicles belonging to idiots who do not know right from wrong.
There appears to be NO Road Safety on the Island
The Councils Highways Department should look into the problems down
Great Preston Road
Vehicles speed along at 50mph plus.
Idiots park on pavements
Traffic calming, speed Camera’s and Double Yellow lines is a must along this
DANGEROUS road.
Parking Meters / Permit parking would also be ideal.
I am fed up trying to park my Car when returning home from work due to many
Households clogging up the Road.
They are always parked there ,it causes havoc down this road , got cars coming down the road in the middle of the road because of his parking. Also makes it difficult for us getting off our driveway too.
The guy must be backward
If there is an accident due to this Moron
Not only would he or she be liable for what happened so would
IW Council for not sorting out Road Safety on the Island.
IW Council should prioritise Road Safety down Great Preston Road.
Oh no that is so sad. Condolences to all the family XX
That’s so horrific I hope the family of the man are looked after.
Also I hope the female is OK.
Thank you to emergency services
Sincere condolences to all family and friends.
Tragic…
Also thoughts with the emergency services.
Robed of his retirement and pain for his loved one’s, so sorry for this sad chapter in his life..we never know what is around the corner..
Yes, it was frustrating getting stuck in this (and being late for work) but I made it home at the end of the day, unlike this poor chap. Condolence to his family. RIP.
The woman is an lsa at medina and carisbrooke, hope she is okay and all thoughts got to the 74 year olds family
Over the last few years, sadly so many medical episodes and sudden deaths.
In the UK alone there are 1,800 excess deaths each week.
It’s not all youngsters this proves my point pensioner aargh
Sorry to hear this rest in peace dear fellow
