UPDATED: A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm/imitation firearm in a public place after Police were called to East Cowes last night (Friday).
Concerned members of the public alerted Hampshire Constabulary to the presence of a man with a ‘rifle’ at the bottom of York Avenue shortly before 19:30.
Officers swiftly descended on the town and arrested a local man on suspicion of a firearms offence, as well as on suspicion of possessing a Class B drug.
One witness has told Island Echo:
“I’ve never seen Police move so quickly. They had him in [the] van and away pretty soon after they got there”.
The individual remains in custody at Newport Police Station this morning.
UPDATE TUESDAY – Police have confirmed that the 33-year-old man has been released without charge, but he remains under investigation.
