More than 2 years after he was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled drug of Class A, a Ryde man has finally been sentenced at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.
Adrian Palmer, 34, of Southfield Gardens in Ryde, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates earlier this week (Tuesday).
The court heard that over 2 years ago, on 18th September 2021, Police noticed a vehicle parked on double yellow lines on Melville Street in Ryde. Police found Palmer in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
Inside the motor, a number of small foil wraps were located containing what was later found to be cocaine. The total amount seized from the vehicle was 22.67g.
In Police interview over a week later, Palmer admitted that the drugs were his and were for his own personal use.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick told the court that at the time of the incident, Palmer was homeless and that he was using cocaine to help him get through those difficult times. He added that Palmer had won a small sum gambling and that he had brought 1oz of the Class A drug, explaining the amount found in his car.
Palmer – who works as a sous chef – has a total of 6 previous convictions.
It was heard that the reason the case took so long to be before the courts was that Police were conducting a protracted investigation into Palmer after searching his electronic devices. No further offences were found to have been committed.
Sentencing Palmer, Magistrates handed him a £300 fine, £85 costs and a £34 surcharge fee.
