A man who previously said he couldn’t provide a specimen as he was scared of needles has been handed a 3-year driving ban.
Raymond Jennings, 56, of Alverstone Road in Winford, previously pleaded guilty to 1 count of failing to provide when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 18th October.
At a sentencing hearing on Friday, Leah Dillon, prosecuting, said that on the afternoon of 2nd October, Police received a call from someone at The Fighting Cocks pub stating that a man drinking there was possibly going to drive home. The Police were subsequently alerted to the number plate of Jennings’ car – a VW Passat.
An officer saw Jennings driving along nearby Bathingbourne Lane, soon stopping him on Watery Lane. The 56-year-old cooperated fully with the roadside procedure, blowing a reading of 78.
At the police station in Newport, Jennings gave multiple more breath samples until officers realised that the machine was broken. At this point, Jennings was asked to give a sample of blood or urine. To this request, Jennings said he wasn’t going to comply as he was scared of needles.
Amy Hosell, defending, said that Jennings has shy bladder syndrome meaning he couldn’t urinate outside the home and that he believes he does indeed have alcohol issues.
Jennings has 1 previous conviction for another drink driving offence committed back in 2013 and as a result, was liable for the minimum 3-year driving disqualification.
When the court last heard the case, a decision to adjourn was made to allow for a pre-sentence report to be compiled.
At this 2nd hearing Jennings was disqualified from driving for 3 years, after what Magistrates classed was a deliberate refusal. He was also sentenced to a 12-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work attached and 15 rehabilitation activity days
He was ordered to pay a surcharge fee of £114 and £85 costs.

shy bladder syndrome meaning he couldn’t urinate outside the home ..
another made up, load of drivel under the heading of a social anxiety disorder – jeez what next.
he was trying to blag it, when he realised their machine was broken… the guy has already had one conviction for this and was clearly trying it on.
I have shy bladder syndrome and avoid going for pee anywhere other than home, but in a police Stn,after a couple of hours and glass water I think would probably wet myself – no excuses, just trying to avoid
Just get two glasses and pour water from one to the other and back again, and again, within his hearing. It works.
