22-year-old Mazie Bailey has been handed a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after she hit a man with a glass bottle resulting in him having 7 stitches to his lip.
Bailey, of Atkinson Drive in Newport, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 17th December charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm – a charge she pleaded guilty to at the earliest opportunity.
The court heard from Crown Prosecutor Lauren McConnell how, on 7th March this year, a homeowner on Cook Avenue in Newport heard a commotion outside his property. He noted 2 males and 2 females loitering near some garages and giving abuse to his neighbour.
The victim went outside and soon had to ‘pull’ a male off his neighbour. It is at this point that he was struck in the face with a glass bottle, with blood dripping down his front as a result.
Attending hospital, the innocent victim had to receive 7 stitches to his lip to close the wound. Thankfully, he did not need any dental work despite initially believing his teeth had been damaged.
Magistrates heard how an ID parade was carried out to enable the victim to identify Mazie Bailey as being responsible for the assault. DNA evidence on Bailey’s clothing was also analysed,
Addressing the bench, Probation explained how since the offence the 22-year-old has made significant progress having decreased her alcohol consumption, although she remains alcohol dependent, unfit to work and a high risk to the public. Probation detailed how Bailey feels she would struggle to cope in prison and hopes to apologise to her victim in the near future.
Having heard the evidence and details of the victim’s injuries, Magistrates handed the 22-year-old a 20-week sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered her to pay £250 compensation. Existing community orders are to continue.
Andre Usbourne, Chair of the Bench, addressed Bailey to say:
“If you hadn’t of made this progress you would have gone to prison”.

Alcohol dependent and “unfit to work”. Guess who’s paying her bills? And as though that’s not enough, we also get to pay for the courts that have to listen to these no marks and their cases. No wonder there’s no money for the poor.

These Magistrates are far too soft and liberal. This was a very serious assault and NOBODY should have to put up with this. She should be in prison.
With her track record should never be FREE
Join the deliberately self inflicted smack/piss head work avoidence scheme, where you get a life time of every thing for free,and you will be thought more of, than someone who has worked all their life for all they’ve got, and then get it taken away to pay them with.
This happened in March but the woman has not managed, in the intervening nine months, to address her alcohol dependance (albeit she drinks a bit less than she did), get herself fit for work and is still deemed to be a high risk to the public and the Magistrates considered this sufficient progress to allow her a suspended sentence, despite still being subject to other community orders. Two questions beg: 1) would the sentence have been suspended if she was male,2) isn’t it high time the Ministry of Justice dispensed with lay magistrates and had all professional judges? One thing is for sure, the victim has more chance of a visit from Santa Claus than seeing the compensation she has been ordered to pay, despite being unable to work.
Tax payers will be paying the compensation
it will be from her benefits.
Persons breaking the law should receive NO
benefits.
The laws in this country need to be looked at and bought up to date, urgently. What this piece of human filth should have been given was, yes, a suspended sentence, BY THE NECK. I for one would gladly supply the rope and carry the sentence out. She has never put anything into the system and never will. What use is she to the human race, just scum.
