Serial shoplifter Raymond Skelly has been handed a 20-week prison sentence after stealing more than £900 worth of goods from shops in Newport. 45-year-old Skelly, of Culver Parade in Sandown, is back behind bars after his latest crime spree over a period of 5 weeks. Appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Thursday (1st August), Skelly pleaded guilty to 6 charges of theft from a shop, including:
- Theft of £37 worth of alcohol from Sainsbury’s in Newport on 26th June
- Theft of £300 worth of food, drink, laundry and electrical items from B&M in Newport on 6th July
- Theft of £152 worth of food, drink and clothes from Sainsbury’s in Newport on 6th July
- Theft of £158.99 worth of clothing from Sports Direct in Newport on 10th July
- Theft of a drill worth £49.99 from B&M in Newport on 30th July
- Theft of £274.93 worth of goods from B&M in Newport on 30th July
It was in September last year that the 45-year-old received a 24-week sentence for stealing £500 of goods from the Co-Operative in Ryde and for other thefts in Southampton and Derbyshire. Magistrates have this time around handed down a 20-week sentence and ordered Raymond Skelly to pay a £154 victim surcharge and £85 costs. A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Neighbourhood teams continue to target habitual shoplifters and support businesses across the Island affected by retail crime”.
How about paying a bit of compensation then?
Nowdays with shops not providing free carrier bags and
many people do smart shop etc and put items in their own
Bags etc, it must be a nightmare to know who has paid for an
item or not.
Old fashioned shopping was much better, everyone use to line up
at a checkout to make payment, a much better way to shop.
Sounds a right result £900 worth of stolen goods pays a fine of £239 well worth the gamble I’m off to the shops right now
I thought a cereal shoplifter was someone who stole
Weetabix or cornflakes.
At least he will get free Porridge.
Lol
