39-year-old Warren Angus, who plunged a house into darkness before throwing a wooden box at a woman who was scared of the dark, enjoyed Christmas dinner behind bars this year.
Angus, of Millward Place in Ryde, appeared at the Isle of Wight Crown Court for sentencing on Friday 20th December.
Prosecutor Tim Devlin told the court that the incident happened at an address in Ryde and that Angus and his victim had been in a relationship at the time.
The court heard how, on occasion, Angus would turn the electricity supply off plunging the house into darkness, something he did on 30th December 2021. After the lights went out, the victim made her way to the top of the stairs where she pleaded with Angus to turn the lights back on.
Angus – who was under the influence of alcohol – then proceeded to throw a wooden box at the female, causing her a split lip.
The victim – with blood pouring down her face – pleaded with Angus once again but he refused, before later turning the power back on and telling the victim to ‘clean herself up’ adding that he ‘wasn’t going to call an ambulance’.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was alerted to the events of that December night in February 2022 after Angus threatened to kill himself and the victim by driving his car into a tree.
In interview, Angus – who has 8 convictions on his criminal record – initially denied committing the offences, following that up with several not guilty pleas at the Isle of Wight Law Courts.
The court heard how there had been numerous delays in proceedings due to various issues and that Angus didn’t change his plea to guilty until the day of a Crown Court trial on 15th October 2024.
Angus’ solicitor said that he knew his behaviour on the day in question was ‘deeply unacceptable and needs to be punished’. She also added that Angus had tackled some of the personal issues in his life ‘head on’.
In handing down a sentence, His Honour Judge Melville KC said that the victim was a ‘prisoner’ who was ‘unable to resist’ what Angus was doing to her as a result of her fears and anxieties.
Warren Angus was handed a 24-month prison sentence.
