A 17-year-old boy has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a man in his 70s was seriously assaulted in Ryde last week – sustaining what is understood to be a fractured jaw and a bleed on the brain.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services responded to Salters Park, at the bottom of Salters Road in Haylands, at just gone 17:00 last Wednesday (12th March). It followed reports of a verbal altercation that had developed into a physical assault.
A member of the public spotted the situation unfolding and went to the victim’s aid, with the suspect fleeing the scene.
It’s claimed that the elderly male suffered a bleed on the brain and a fractured jaw as a result of the attack. Police say that the 72-year-old victim sustained head and facial injuries.
He has since been discharged from hospital.
Now, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 17-year-old boy has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and a lesser offence of possession of a Class B drug – cannabis.
It’s understood he was detained yesterday (Monday) after a 6-day hunt.
The teen has been remanded in custody to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court today (Tuesday).
UPDATE – The teen has been bailed until 23rd April, when he will appear at the Isle of Wight Youth Court.
I thought cannabis was supposed to mellow you out. So much for the people who always tell us it’s the ones who enjoy the odd pint who are the violent ones
Too many Numpty’s come out with the
ballsh*t it helps their pain.
“Load of b@ll@cks”
Ibuprofen is available in all chemists.
Bang him up.
[…] 17-YEAR-OLD CHARGED OVER SERIOUS ASSAULT ON ELDERLY MALE IN RYDE […]
Watch the evil shit get away with it ”because of his age” do gooders bullshit.
Scum is scum, end of, and an assault is an assault, what has his age got to do with it? Putting this as an excuse for namby pamby punishment is aiding and abetting him. Bloody gutless piece of shit, pick on an old man, shame he didn’t give him a good kicking to show he picked on the wrong one. BUT who would plod have sided with if he did. Pure self defense
Why are comments with profanity published? You would expect “CockRobbin, most likely middle aged, would have some control over his temper. Seemingly cut from the same cloth as the teenaged assailant.
What makes it even more sick, is that WE won’t ever see a mug shot of him, or even know his name, when low life scum like him NEED disclosing for our own safety. He should be tagged and a curfew put on him
I sense an unduly lenient sentence of the horizon.
An elderly late friend of my Father in Law
who was born and bred in Ryde over 100 years
ago said Ryde is a Sh*thole, Len was right.
I remember Len speaking those words along
Ryde High Street over 30 years ago.
Len wasn’t wrong, when a born and bred
Islanders says a place is sh@thole, they ain’t
wrong.
The country needs to get tough, if this lowlife
carried out such an act on a Politician or a Royal
I wonder what his punishment would be!
Youngsters have no respect for their elders!
Needs locking up and when let free, should be
conscripted, might make such persons a better person.
I doubt it, once a bad apple, always a bad apple.
@cockrobin so if the old guy had given the young lad a kicking that would of been alright? But the young lad held his own and the old guy lost so the youngsters the one in the wrong? Two wrongs don’t make a right and if the old guy had just had his walk and not acted like some sort of law enforcer he would have been left alone if he was that concerned over a 17 year old having a spliff in a park he should have phoned the relevant law enforcement that we pay to police the island not taken it upon himself to be judge jury and executioner maybe he will think twice before trying to police the island without a warrant card or position of power
Lets go back a few months to the case where an elderly couple were assaulted by a 17 year old on Binstead Beach, who got away with it ”because of his age” then there was the old guy who was attacked at Ryde bus station by a 17 year old, but got away with it ”because of his age”, now there is this, a 17 year old who will probably get away with it ”because of his age”. Wouldn’t it be ironic if this 17 year old, just happened to be the same 17 year old that gets away with it ”because of his age”.Someone needs to be held to account if this is the case. Heisenburg comment: the old guy should have defended himself against the assault, the spliff is nothing to do with It, and the brat is still a gutless piece of scum to attack an old man. Hopefully he will pick on the wrong one one day and learn a lesson.
Once again your justifying violence with violence ain’t right for 17 year olds to be attacking 70 year olds and it ain’t right for 70 year olds to attack 17 year olds regardless of who starts what you’d think at 70 tho an adult would have the common sense to not get into altercations with anyone least of all young men a third of his age what is there to prove at 70? The older generation need to learn that the world has massively changed the days of clipping a youngster round the ear or grabbing them by it and marching them home to face “consequences” are long gone be wise to take that on Board before approaching the youth of today with a past day attitude lucky he wasn’t in London or Birmingham as he prob would have had a blade pulled on him not just a few left and rights
