19-year-old Aaron Thomas, who was found to be drug driving after he was stopped by Police, has been banned from the roads for 15 months.
Thomas, of West Street in Ryde, admitted drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (29th October).
Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court that on the 16th April at around 13:10, Police on patrol in the Ryde area stopped a Mini Cooper on George Street.
When questioned, Thomas admitted smoking cannabis the day before, something a roadside drugs wipe confirmed.
Having been taken back to Newport Police Station a further test was conducted that showed that Thomas had 2.3ug/l in his system – above the limit of 2.0ug/l.
The court heard how Thomas was disqualified back in June, however the offence pre-dates the current case.
Defending Thomas, Jim Osborne told the court that his client had turned his life around since his arrest and that he hasn’t touched cannabis – which he was using to self medicate – since April.
Magistrates handed Thomas a 15-month driving ban and ordered he pay a fine of £295. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge fee of £118.

I get fed up reading about all the drink or drug drivers
on the island.
Bang the selfish B’stards up.
Or just stop reading the Island Echo.
I am left wondering whether drink or drug driving is mentioned in the theory test? If not, then it should. Add to the actual driving test a “Drive in a simulator” showing the effects of drink and drug driving. Also add a section of you as a police officer having to tell a family that others of the family will not be coming home because of these morons. Finally get any of our useless government ministers to pass a law which when up before a judge is to automatically get the offenders car sold on or crushed plus a heavy fine and jailed. Is this a bit strong for the “Wimpy brigade”? If you do not agree, then imagine that it is your loved ones that have just been crushed or burned to death.
