A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a major fire at the former Cygnet Hotel in Sandown last weekend.
As first reported by Island Echo, the fire at the former hotel on Carter Street began shortly before 17:25 on Saturday (19th October), with multiple appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised to tackle the flames.
Crews from across the Isle of Wight – support by resources from the mainland who were standing by at Island stations – remained on scene for over 14 hours tackling the blaze which burnt well into the night.
The fire caused severe damage to the building, completely destroying the roof and upper floors of the former hotel.
In the days that followed, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed that they were treating the incident as arson.
Today (Wednesday), Police have confirmed that that a 14-year-old boy from Shanklin has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
He has been released on conditional bail until 21st January. 2026. Investigations into the exact nature of the incident continue.
