26-year-old Kazm Saed has been jailed for a total of 13 years after kidnapping an elderly couple in their 80s from their home near Carisbrooke and subjecting them to a terrifying ordeal at knifepoint.
Saed, who is originally from Iraq, denied 2 counts of aggravated burglary, 1 count of kidnap, 1 count of robbery and 1 count of burglary but was found guilty of all charges at the Isle of Wight Crown Court today (Friday).
On 28th May last year, Saed broke into the Mountbatten Hospice warehouse on Riverway, Newport and stole 2 computer monitors. Then, on 30th May, he forced entry to a residential address on Riverway and threatened the elderly occupant, Mr Graham Deacon, with a knife whilst demanding money and his bank card pin number.
In fear for his safety, Mr Deacon, then aged 84, agreed and Saed left with cash, the bank card and a mobile phone. He later made unsuccessful attempts to withdraw money using the stolen card.
Saed, of no fixed abode, was subsequently arrested by officers on suspicion of burglary but released on police bail the following day – 1st June – as investigations continued.
On 3rd June, a search of the Whitcombe area was launched after a male – understood to be Saed – was seen in a garden shed. The search failed to locate the suspect.
Around 12 hours later, during the early hours of Friday 4th June, Saed entered a house in Nunnery Lane and threatened the elderly occupants – Graham and Rachel Fuller – with a knife. He demanded they give him £1,000 in cash before ordering them to get dressed and drive him to a cashpoint in Newport.
With knives held to their throats, the couple, both aged in their 80s, were in turn ordered to withdraw cash and hand it over to Saed. After this, Saed demanded he be driven out of town before he exited the car at the top of Cedar Hill in Carisbrooke and ran off.
The Fullers, finally free from Saed’s grips, alerted the Police to their ordeal.
A large scale search was launched involving the National Police Air Service helicopter. Then, later that morning, Saed was arrested at Costa Coffee in Lower St James Street, Newport by officers making enquiries in the area.
Detective Constable Ross Jones has said:
“Saed subjected these poor people to terrifying ordeals, where they genuinely feared for their lives.
“Their courage throughout this process has been inspiring, and it is because of their strength that we have been able to pull all of the pieces of the puzzle together.
“Saed’s denial despite the evidence being stacked against him, including forensics and identification by the victims, has been absurd. I am pleased that the jury have seen through this and he is now in prison where he belongs.”
Recorder Paul Garlick sentenced Saed to 13 years behind bars.
Saira Nisar, CPS Wessex Senior Crown Prosecutor, has said:
“The victims in this case were incredibly brave when Saed broke into their properties, threatened them and took their money, and indeed they demonstrated bravery and courage again by giving vital evidence against him at the trial.
“The evidence given by the victims, and the forensic evidence collected during the police investigation, ensured that the CPS could build a strong case for prosecution and that Saed faced justice for the crimes he committed.”

So he now gets free board and lodging for 13 years at the taxpayers expense. Why not just deport him back to Iraq?

Reality is, it’ll be 6 and a half years and this piece of s**t will be back on the streets!
He will be out in 6.5 years and then he will be homed and given all he needs while we have people living on the streets, imagine if you was to do that in his country?
is anyone really surprised given the state of our borders, bet it doesn’t get deported at the end of its sentence and will go on to do the same again but this time ending up killing someone.
He should be deported at the end of his sentence, and no parole considered for him.
He is extremely dangerous and clearly has no empathy or conscience whatsoever..
The victims must have been absolutely terrified beyond imagination, well done Police and the Courts.
Why was he bailed after holding the first victim at Knife point/threatening with a knife!?!?
If he had been remanded then none of those other crimes would have been committed & those poor people wouldn’t have been scarred for what little lives they have left!!!!
I’m sorry….but most refugees should be Women & Children first….the same as in previous wars, he definitely doesn’t look of school age….Jesus, anyone could be a murderer from those countries & we wouldn’t even know bc there’s no system there & we’re just waving them through the turnstile…..
No doubt some bleeding heart will make excuses for his behaviour and get the sentence reduced!
When you see the rightly tough stance taken by Australia on immigration, you have to ask what the hell is wrong with Britain?
We are not protected by our government as are the Australians, but thrown to the wolves of the world by ours here.
And it dosent matter which party they are either.

I believe the noose would be justified in cases like this.
13 years at tax payers expense, sorry send him back to Iraq, let them have him he is not worthy to live in this country and what makes people think he will improve in 13 years (if he actually serves 13 years) he will learn more in prison and be an even bigger threat to society.
