A disqualified driver from Freshwater who was found to be driving with drugs in his system has been sent to prison for 12 weeks.
Nicky Dickinson, 38, of Solent Gardens in Freshwater, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Friday) for 4 offneces of driving whilst disqualified, driving without 3rd party insurance, drug driving (Benzoylecgonine) and failing to surrender to bail.
He had previously pleaded guilty to 3 of the offences on 4th November and later went on to fail to attend court in December.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on the evening of 25th July, at around 19:40, a Police officer was patrolling when he requested assistance from colleagues in dealing with a male in a blue Hyundai i30 outside The Bugle on St James’ Street in Yarmouth.
The officer had pulled Dickinson over and had found a small clear bag with what looked like a white powder in it in his car. A roadside drugs wipe was completed and the 38-year-old tested positive for cocaine and cannabis.
Dickinson was taken to Newport Police Station where it was found that he was driving whilst disqualified and without correct insurance. Blood test results that came back in October found that the 38-year-old had 199mg of Benzoylegonine in his blood – the legal limit is 50.
Back in February, Dickinson was handed a 12-month driving ban for a similar offence. He was only 6 months into the ban at the time of these new offences.
Defending, Amy Hosell said that he was worried that the result would set him back with his mental health and that he wants to get back into work as a roofer if he were to get the chance.
However, Magistrates handed Dickinson a 12-week custodial sentence. He was banned from driving for a total of 3 years and 6 weeks – to begin from when he’s released. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge fee of £154.

At least he had someone defeending him.
Nick, Nick, Nick
You mate are an absolute plonker.
Nice one !! Too many banned drivers keep on driving…
As this one doesn’t take any notice of any laws what makes these magistrates think being in prison for 6 weeks or so will change anything, i say 6 weeks because he will be released early as usual.
Prison sentences should be far harsher and they should serve the full term for each offence separately with no remission.
Finally, one of these idiots get a custodial sentence. At last the magistrates are waking up.
He skipped bail and failed to attend for a different offense. 1 month behind bars isn’t gonna do much is it.
When will judges take the car away from offenders that would be a better punishment .
Should have been Five years in jail and crushed his car.
Excellent news a druggie finally going to prison. However I don’t imagine for one nano second that this looser will pay the slightest bit of attention to the law of the land for the 3 years and 6 weeks ban. Not a chance in hell. His car should be donated free of charge to any Island family who could benefit from its use.
