2 young ‘urban explorers’ have been detained by Police, but since let go, after being caught inside the disused Ryde Theatre.
Previously occupied and much-loved buildings such as Ryde’s former Town Hall and Theatre can be inviting places for those looking to document the building’s heritage, but gaining access to a property can be an offence and is, as best, trespass.
Local response officers and a dog unit were called to to Lind Street at around 16:15 when it was reported that 2 individuals were gaining entry to the building, with their intentions unknown.
Police arrested the 2 males on suspicion of burglary but, following further investigations, it transpired the individuals were not inside the property to steal.
The boy’s parents have since collected the youngsters who have been dealt with appropriately.
Police say they don’t look to criminalise young people, especially as these 2 nippers had not previously been in trouble with the law.

When you say young urban breaking in do you mean scum ??????
when you say “old bean” don’t you mean vile piece of work with nothing better to do than call everyone other than yourself scum maybe you should take a look at yourself and ask why am I so full of hatred, personally I just assume that no one loves you otherwise you wouldn’t talk such waffle.
They know they ought not be gaddin about in there, a night in the cells might just save a year or two in jail later.
Too soft with young trash nowadays.
What leads you to think they’re “trash”? Characterised as ‘boys’, ‘nippers’ and not having been in trouble before, they just sound like regular adventurous kids.
And not even a fine from Police because it was their 30 minutes of exercise. Not the best time for a bit of Urbex with the amount of curtain twitching going on. Silly boys!
Bring back the birch….
I was criminalised for shopping (fined) but at least it was not trespass and the police are happy that I have now damaged two of their cars!
So to confirm, you were unhappy about being fined so you damaged something that we the public pay for and the police who fined you couldn’t personally give a toss about since it makes zero impact to their paycheque. Well done man slow clap time is it.
Why the hell were they out ?. To many kids out and about.
And why did the police let them go, have the parent’s been fined.
Good on the police for not charging them.
The council could make money opening up disused buildings for people to explore.
I’d pay to go in some of them that’s for sure.
Have a search for “urban explorers” on you tube. There is a piece on Ryde Town hall, as well as many other places on the Island. I don’t know if these two are the producers of the items but, why refer to them as “Urban Explorers”? Coincidence? Or or do the police know, or the Echo reporters, know something which hasn’t been revealed in the report?
I’m thinking it might be youtubes ‘Abandoned Isle Of Wight’ great videos of disused places on the isle of wight, love that stuff
“Well we got away with that, next time bring some mates, and some matches.”
Before you know it, huge fire, huge cost and risk of others lives.
‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’, so says the Bible and in this instance it is right.
Pathetic excuses have been the ruination of this countries youth. Be it “They saw it in a film, or video game and thought they could do it (something dangerous or vile).” Or, “they only carried a knife because others do.”
Never give them the benefit of the doubt, if you are wrong, then a little hurt pride, BUT being the adult with more sense, if your assumptions are correct, then you may just have saved their lives from being ruined, and some innocent persons life too from yet another life long vile, troublesome, anti social, low life ruining decent peoples lives and property.
Years of wishy washy, weak, trusting, highly paid, doo gooders, usually living well away from the gutter trash they defend, who have destroyed the lives of many. The doo gooder may ‘save’ one or two innocents, whilst allowing tens of thousands of vile to become ever more so, smirking at their weakness and trust given to them by stupid adults. Almost all are ‘sorry’ once caught, and almost all are smirking and laughing once ‘let off’.
Time for a change of attitudes.
Please make a list of all the things you and your friends got uo to when kids then comment
almost made sense until you mentioned the bible :\
Of course, whilst not making excuses for these delinquents behaviour, the question must be asked if young mini trash can gain access easily to this building, then the security is more than poor.
Is that deliberate so as the Council hope some delinquent will torch the place, and they can then claim on the insurance and have it rebuilt to what they want it to be, for no expense?
Thought that ploy was only reserved for struggling hoteliers on Wight.
Much loved building – What? whenever I go through there its a case of avoiding the bird shit and looking at the deterioration of the place!
Much better option would be to put a block of flats there!
That is likely what the council will do with this building, hope that some low life burns it down, then be able to ‘sell off’ the site to very grateful ‘friendly’ developers thus both earning a packet, with minimum expense and no protesters should they do so in such an historic building as would happen if still fully intact.
I hope it becomes a gig venue again. I’d go there in the very early 2000s, and had such a great time. It’s big enough but also intimate. Performers seemed to love it. (I also went there for the public meeting about the Council’s proposal to redirect Union Street traffic UP-hill!!
Why do papers give names like urban explorers or activists , when you look into them most are basically trouble makers
and have got nothing worthwhile in there lives.
Wheres the fine for being out COPS ARE HOPELESS AGAIN FAIL TO KEEP THE PUBLIC SAFE. CORONA VIRUS, STAY IN.
Reminder that trespassing is actually a civil offence and therefore, providing that the people hadn’t burgled anything or committed any other crimes whilst there, there is little to nothing that the police can do.
What is the point of the Coronavirus Legislation if the Police take no action when such a blatant contravention goes unpunished?
Might be that guy from youtube called Abandoned Isle of wight, he makes some really cool videos of the inside of abandoned buildings here, he doesnt touch or steal anything just documents what places look like now inside, with the history told along the way
….i wonder if its him
