Police on the Isle of Wight are appealing for witnesses to come forward after an incident at a play park in Ryde last Saturday in which a male is alleged to have wielded a long stick.
It’s said that at around 14:25 on 15th April a man entered the play park on Ryde Esplanade carrying a long stick, which he proceeded to swing around causing families to leave the park in fear.
The man then walked off towards Ryde Canoe Lake.
Officers attended and arrested a 49-year-old man on suspicion of common assault, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of cannabis. He has been bailed with conditions until 15th July while further enquiries are carried out.
Now, officers would like to hear from the members of the public who were present at the park at this time and witnessed the incident.

And he had drugs on him. This island is a drugs haven of the south NOT the jewel of the south. it’s getting a dump
i completely agree with you bob one. it should be legalized
No one forces you to live here
Well said Rob ,i totally agree with you
So that’s the answer to any complaint is it? Simplistic.
The Isle of Wight is no different than anywhere else, recreational drug use is everywhere. It’s the crime classA drugs bring is the real issue, heroin, crack, meth amphetamine. I see it daily in all parts of the country, why should the good old Isle of Wight be a y different. Prime pickings for county lines dealers
Its simple if you dont like the island then move !!!
As the others have insinuated, if you were to move north in search of a drug free town or city, you’d very quickly be disappointed and on the first ferry back.
Well spotted bob one, it is a pity insurance details aren’t as easy and quick to check. Hopefully if the photo is current and not an archive photo IE will pass on the info to the police
Do the police actually drive around in ten year old cars?
Arrested for common assault when all he did was swing a stick in the air? Pathetic. Do him for drug use and causing a public nuisance with intent to cause fear, otherwise a decent brief would get the case laughed out of court.
Under the CJA, threatening assault can be treated the same as physical assault:
“common assault is committed when one person causes another to apprehend or fear that force is about to be used to cause some degree of personal contact and possible injury”
When was this particular photograph taken? may have been taken years ago when the van DID have tax and MOT. And if the police vehicle doesn’t have an ANPR recognition system, is the police officer meant to be psychic?
I know a playground there with sand, I don’t know a play park.
Funny that they arrest them and let’s them go
I agree on both fronts. It should have been legalised years ago and yes this island is becoming a dump as you put it.But ask yourself the reasons why?Just another underfunded seasonal seaside resort with no permanent jobs or affordable accommodation for the young.Don’t panic,as things stand, places like ours.. (hey.. look at Blackpool.)always attract the mad, dispossessed, the anguished and the poor…. Obviously excluding our beloved tourists!…
Lock him up oh I think not
