Isle of Wight cyclists Ewan Cook, Finley Manser-Grundy and Sonny Shuttleworth have all delivered impressive performances at Round 1 of the Southern XC series in Winchester.
The trio competed at Matterley Basin last weekend, facing challenging conditions on a dry and technical course featuring twisty woodland descents, exposed roots and fast corners.
In the under-10s category, Finley Manser-Grundy produced a standout ride in a field of 38 competitors. Starting from the front row, he quickly settled into fifth place before losing control on a tricky descent and taking a fall.
Despite the setback, Finley remounted quickly and fought his way back through the field. Heading into the final lap in 6th position, he made a decisive move in the closing 400 metres, overtaking 2 riders on the inside to secure an impressive 4th-place finish.
Jack, Finley’s dad, has said:
“Although Finley still has another year in this age category and he was up against older or bigger riders, his performance was a true testament to his determination”.
In the under-12 race, Sonny Shuttleworth also put in a strong performance on a demanding course. Competing in a fast-paced field, he held his own on the climbs and made the most of his strengths on the flowing woodland descents.
Vanessa, Sonny’s mum, has said:
“Sonny thoroughly enjoyed the race and is already looking ahead to Round 2. While cross-country isn’t his primary discipline, it provides valuable training for both fitness and race mindset – skills that will carry into his downhill season, which begins next weekend in the Forest of Dean”.

Meanwhile, Ewan Cook competed in the elite category, lining up second on the front row for the 7-lap race. He made a strong start and took the lead early on, holding position in a leading group for the opening laps.
A gap opened on the fourth lap during a climb, and although Ewan pushed hard to close it down, he ultimately crossed the line in a well-earned 2nd place.
Ewan Cook has said:
“I’m super pleased with my result in my first ever elite race. It’s such a huge jump from junior class but I’m really excited for the rest of the season”.
