Wight Eagles bowed out of the Hampshire Cup following a 5-1 defeat at home to Division One side Winchester City Flyers Reserves on a wet and soggy pitch.
Despite difficult conditions, both teams started with determination, but it was Winchester who settled more quickly, showing their higher league experience. The visitors opened the scoring within the first 10 minutes after a spell of strong build-up play.
Wight Eagles responded with energy, pressing high and working hard to break through a solid Winchester defence, but a second goal from the visitors followed a well-worked run down the right wing.
Just before the half-time whistle, Winchester extended their lead further, going into the break 3-0 up.
The Eagles made three changes at the start of the second half, which helped them find more rhythm. A deserved goal pulled one back for the home side during a period of sustained pressure. Mia Richardson impressed down the right and forced a good save from the goalkeeper.
However, Winchester struck again against the run of play with a well-placed shot from the edge of the area to restore their 3-goal advantage.
In the final moments of the match, the visitors added a fifth to seal a 5-1 victory and progress to the next round.
