A man who made hundreds of nuisance calls to emergency services and the coroners office on the Isle of Wight showing anger at the inquest result into his late wife’s death has pleaded guilty to 3 communications offences.
Paul Sainsbury, 68, of Leeson Road in Ventnor pleaded guilty to 3x persistently make use of public communication network to cause annoyance when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Friday).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said that on dates between 15th February and 29th November, Sainsbury sent calls to operatives at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Isle of Wight Coroners Office.
It was heard in court that the reason for all of Sainsbury’s calls was his disagreement with a decision made by the coroner regarding his late wife’s death back in March 2021 – which was recorded as a drugs-related death.
On these calls, the 68-year-old was found to be using threatening and derogatory language including calling call handlers ‘sh*theads’ and a ‘waste of f*cking space’.
It was also noted that Sainsbury’s calls often blocked the phone system at the coroners office and that his repeated spamming impacted on the service of both the police and ambulance service.
Sainsbury was last in court in 2020 when he was charged with a public nuisance offence. At that hearing, he was told that if any further offences were committed that custody would be a real possibility.
Jim Osborne, defending, said that his client strongly disagreed with the decision that was made regarding the death of his wife and that the calls he made were an urgent plea for help.
Mr Osborne also added that since Sainsbury had been charged with the incidents, all 3 agencies have accepted liability.
The case was adjourned until 10th February to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled prior to sentencing.

This poor chap needs a bit of help imo.
And not court appearances.
I wouldn’t normally agree with you, but yes this chap has been given the shit end of the stick, no doubt there.
For all 3 agencies to admit liability…….
Whilst no one will condone the actions of insulting and harrassing indviduals that work in agencies who were not directly connected to the decision making process regarding the coroners findings, it is a sad indictment and a clear demonstration of arrogance by those three agencies in their refusal to revisit a finding, where someone who knew the deceased on a personal level disputed what had been concluded.
Mr Sainsburys opinion clearly didn’t matter to those that decided on the cause of death, as they felt that they were right and he was wrong and nothing would change that.
I am quite sure that Mr Sainsbury won’t mind what the court says or does, if it means his wifes case is revisited.
Very strange people on the Isle of Wight
