Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham, West Sussex has announced a new scholarship for pupils entering the school from the Isle of Wight.
The Queen Victoria Scholarship, for bright pupils from the Island with academic potential, who would benefit from an independent boarding school education, is now open.
Queen Victoria was a great supporter of Christ’s Hospital and became a governor of the School in 1843; she made more than one hundred pupil presentations during her reign. Five of these pupils presented by Queen Victoria to Christ’s Hospital came to the School from the Isle of Wight: Matthew Beattie Grandy in 1846, Thomas Toward in 1849, John Bates Hoffmeister in 1859, Edward Capel Hasler Helby in 1861 and Archibald Cass in 1864.
There is another link between Christ’s Hospital, the Isle of Wight and Queen Victoria. Following her death at Osborne House on 22 January 1901, Captain George Alexander Broad (former Christ’s Hospital pupil) commanded HMS Alberta on her memorable journey across the Solent with the mortal remains of Her Majesty aboard.
Christ’s Hospital scholarships are awarded to pupils who are entering the School at Years 7, 9 and Sixth Form; a Christ’s Hospital Scholarship is worth up to a 20% reduction off the assessed fee level.
Christ’s Hospital is also able to offer an unrivalled number of means-tested bursaries dependent on family circumstances. These bursaries range from 5% reduction of fees up to and including 100% reduction.
A bursary is distinct from a scholarship. Bursaries are given on the basis of family circumstances whereas scholarships reward outstanding achievement; an applicant can be awarded both a bursary and a scholarship.
Christ’s Hospital’s scholarship programme recognises high achieving and outstanding individuals who will excel in the life and education of the School. Our scholars contribute something unique to our School.
The closing date for bursary and scholarship applications for September 2016 entry is 11th September 2015. The next Open Morning is Saturday 25 April.
